So I just put new strings on my guitar for the first time.

I think I see why most "teach yourself guitar" instructions start off with "put strings on, here's how."

After going through the pain in the ass of restringing and tuning an acoustic guitar, I'm downright determined to learn to play something. No way is all that time and effort going to waste.

(Oh. Also, I have a guitar now.)

Nylon or steel?

Steel. It's a folk guitar, not a classical one.

Hooray!

Rose, YOU GO! I'm so excited for you! I remember my poor sore fingers as I worked so hard on the C, F and G cords so I could finally strum out a halting "The answer my friend is blowing in the wind . . . " (Yes, I learned as a child in the 1960s when folk songs were in, in, in and war protest songs were the most in of all!) Playing the guitar is so worth the effort - and it is totally OK to use only one or two fingers for the chords at first - as you build up strength in your hands you can add the full chord configuration. Have fun!

And it really helps when changing strings to use one of those little plastic cranks that fit over the tuning pegs so you don't wear out your fingers turning the pegs. And just in case nobody told you - buy yourself a nice set of wire cutters - you can cut off most of the end of the wire as you only need to keep a couple of rounds on the peg to keep the string in place. Love from she who has enjoyed playing the guitar for her whole life long, and who is very HAPPY for you to find your own enjoyment playing - Mum
