So I just put new strings on my guitar for the first time.
I think I see why most "teach yourself guitar" instructions start off with "put strings on, here's how."
After going through the pain in the ass of restringing and tuning an acoustic guitar, I'm downright determined to learn to play something. No way is all that time and effort going to waste.
(Oh. Also, I have a guitar now.)

And just in case nobody told you - buy yourself a nice set of wire cutters - you can cut off most of the end of the wire as you only need to keep a couple of rounds on the peg to keep the string in place. Love from she who has enjoyed playing the guitar for her whole life long, and who is very HAPPY for you to find your own enjoyment playing - Mum
