I don't have any particular basis for the assertion, but Yo-yo Ma has always struck me as one of those assertively kind and gentle souls the world needs more of. I remember first seeing him perform on Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood (speaking of kind and gentle souls) when I was very small - I believe it was also the first time I'd ever seen a cello played. I loved it so much that I gave serious thought to playing cello in school; I ended up opting for flute instead for practical reasons (the instrument was much less expensive and easier to carry), but I've always been a little sorry about that.

All of which is to say, this post about his unexpectedly visiting my local refugee assistance center, and especially the picture of him interacting with the rapt children, makes my heart happy. So I thought I'd share it with all of you.

He's a national treasure. The Bach cello suites was one of the few recordings everybody could agree on when I worked at Tower.
