Balanced on the cusp of a revelation
Sep. 10th, 2014 12:02 amTwo of my favorite tweets I've seen recently, paraphrased:
"...but if you go by her logic, you start seeing sexism everywhere!"
and
"...but it's not fair that British citizens don't get to vote on Scottish independence!"
It's really a shame that #onthecuspofarevelation is a little too long for a proper tag...

Date: 2014-09-11 12:11 am (UTC)I agree somewhat with not voting on Scottish independence. After all, some might want to vote Scotland out even if the Scottish themselves don't. :)
Meanwhile, I know what happened to the Pound, then Irish Pound when Ireland joined the Exchange Rate Mechanism and later when it joined the Eurozone so I've been moving much money out of Scotland-based financial institutions in advance of the vote. I'll move the rest if there is a yes vote.
As well as the high chance of investment losses there are some significant risk issues with leaving money in Scotland. Consider for example the ratio of financial sector assets to GDP and what happened:
5:1 UK bailed out several large Scotland-based banks and others, going far beyond the strict legal requirements. Along the way regulators and politicians made a number of false statements intended to calm the public and investors, while secretly providing more money that was being disclosed at the time.
7:1 Iceland refused to even comply with the strict legal requirements, defaulting on its international agreements. The UK government reimbursed UK individual and small company investors fully, beyond the legal requirements, then pursued Iceland for the money.
12:1 Scottish ratio if there are no changes.
Of course none of this relates to how Scottish people should vote or, if not in Scotland, want to vote. That question is more about views on autonomy.
There is one thing we can be fairly sure of, though. If the Scottish do vote for independence, the rest of the union won't go and invade them to force them to stay in. See War for Southern Independence... :)
Did you know that it is asserted that the European Union treaties provide no way for a state to leave the EU once it has joined?
