"Sometimes I think you're so focused on making sure that you don't care enough about anything to be disappointed by it that, when you actually do decide to care about something, you don't have any coping mechanisms to deal with it."

--Brian, on why even just the thought of possibly maybe attending music school is enough to keep me tossing and turning all night

Perhaps also a dose of "and what happens if I'm not as good as I want to be?" in the mixture. To be tempered by knowing that you actually do end up doing well at things. Striving for perfection yet accepting a degree of imperfection can be an interesting challenge.

Yeah, there's definitely a not-small dose of George McFly in there. "What if they tell me I'm no good? I just don't think I could take that kind of rejection..." As I recently discussed with a friend in Boston, it's so much easier to just not even try, since then in your mind, if you *had* made the attempt, it would've been perfect. Bringing something into reality by definition means accepting imperfection.

Ah but then comes that perfect moment when all the hard hard work and long years of effort come to fruition: The music swells up and flows from within you in a glorious arch of golden sound - it sweeps the audience into another level, for a timeless instant they experience the absolute power of sheer unlimited JOY!

Now that is worth all the hard work and battling to perfect your artistry. That experience is worth all the sacrifices, the agony, the hurt fingers, the bruises to your ego and all the failures and rejections you will inevitably face along the way.

THAT moment is priceless, because in that moment you are the instrument of destiny, a ray of eternity that touches every soul with transformation. Now THAT moment is worth EVERYTHING!!! Trust me about this - you WANT that moment - it pulls you forward into your dreams. Love from one who knows it will all be so worth it. Your Mum
