Tycho of Penny Arcade, on the ease of leaving things unfinished:

This is something I have great familiarity with. Like most readers, I had functionally consigned On The Rain-Slick Precipice Of Darkness to the furnace. I had let it float away on one of those little lantern boats in a way that brought me closure, if no one else. Insufficient.

Fucking insufficient.

You have to get back on the horse. Somehow, and I don’t know how this kind of thing starts, we have started to lionize horseback-not-getting-on: these casual, a priori assertions of inevitable failure, which is nothing more than a gauze draped over your own pulsing terror. Every creative act is open war against The Way It Is. What you are saying when you make something is that the universe is not sufficient, and what it really needs is more you. And it does, actually; it does. Go look outside. You can’t tell me that we are done making the world.

We Can Make A Much Better Universe!

Darling, I love your writing be it movie review or "Gosh I need a swift kick in the hind-most end!" I was actually thinking this same thing at the end of my weekend. "Why am I so fricking happy? I spent the entire weekend alone." Then I looked around at the well organized boxes of art glass I picked up for a song from an artist moving to the lower 48 and thought of the "Two Raven" piece I'm designing in my head that I'm going to start soon. I looked at the half-finished portrait of Jack's grand kids on my easel that I had been wanting to work on for months and finally kicked into high gear this weekend. I noticed the small stained glass piece of a desert at sunset I'd been meaning to frame for three years, and finally got finished this weekend. Finally, I saw the gorgeous beadwork necklace (that you sent me the beads for) that is half finished on my bead tray.

The I knew why I am so HAPPY! I am made in the image of God - a creator! I am happiest when I am making beautiful things. So I agree, we are here to recreate the universe as a better, brighter, more beautiful place to live and love and play video games . . . so YOU GO!!! Love, Mum

Now if only the new Rainslick game didn't entirely disinterest me. *sigh*

I tried playing the first one and had a hard time getting into it, even though I enjoyed the aesthetic. But I still think the quote's well worth pondering. :)

It's certainly a good quote. :) I just felt like lamenting the game. :)

I liked the first two Rainslick games, although I didn't get into them when I first bought them and tried them. It was a while later when I returned to them that they "clicked" and I enjoyed them a lot. They went on hiatus for a long time, but, much to my surprise, they were showing the third one at PAX East 2012. They've ditched the whole vibe of the series and turned it into a top-down, retro Zelda-style game. I don't mind those every so often, but there's a giant glut of them on the market these days and I've kind of lost interest.

Aww, that does sound sad. I mean, if that's the direction they needed to take it to be excited about it, good for them, but I'm sorry it doesn't sound like it clicks for you. :(
