Well, they say Christmas is a time for wishes to come true.

And after three rounds of bleach, two failed dye jobs, an ultimately pointless round with dye stripper and more money than I like to think about spent at the local beauty supply place...

My wish finally came true.

Step one, of course, is bleaching. I'd never done this before, but fortunately my brother's quite experienced in the realm and didn't mind doing it for me. It was downright odd seeing my hair go from dark brown/red to pale yellow/slightly lighter red.

The smile is to hide the burning going on in my scalp.

Results of the bleaching. The ends got gradually darker as there were more layers of previous dye to contend with. It was an oddly foxy look.

I don't think I make a very convincing blonde.

Hair full of dye, take one, using Manic Panic Ultra Violet.

The results were less than photogenic - I hadn't realized how thorough you have to be when you rinse out the bleach, so while parts of it (especially along the top of my head) turned out great, other parts didn't do so well - my hair ranged from bright blue-violet to dark brown to frosted silver.

A couple of days later, we got another load of supplies and gave it another go. I was rather disappointed to discover that the local Sally was out of the Ultra Violet, as I quite liked the results on the bits that came out properly. Oddly, the entire store seemed to have been cleaned out of dark blue-purple colors, so I got some Beyond The Zone in Huckleberry Blue.

Needless to say, that didn't quite work out either.

Even though the second failure was due to crappy dye rather than user error (and I have emailed the company to ask if they had a bad dye lot or if I shouldn't try using the other colors of theirs I bought), and even though a learning curve is going to be part of any new endeavor, I was feeling pretty discouraged after that second round. Fortunately my brother was pretty gung-ho about fixing it, so off to the store I went again for more bleach, more dye (since they were out of Manic Panic blue, I decided to go with pink), and some dye stripper, which ultimately didn't seem to do much other than smell kind of bad. But, one more bleach job and one bout of pink dye later, and behold.

Was it worth the effort and expense? I like to think so. Mistakes are learning experiences, even when they're expensive ones.

Besides, now I can wish people a Merry Pinkmas.

How do you celebrate Pinkmas? With firearms, of course!

I actually really like the 'failed' blue--but the pink looks stellar! :D

It struck me as a color you would like, actually. Unfortunately the picture doesn't quite do it justice - it was nearly orange in places, and I wanted something a little more consistent. :)

Yeah, I expected I would like the blue, and I think it would work well if applied successfully.

I love the new color, but to be honest, I kept getting distracted from your hair and thinking "Wow, you've got fantastic eyebrows!" You look lovely.

*laughs* Considering I very deliberately don't pluck or wax them (because there's a certain amount of pain and trouble I'm willing to go to for beauty, but that's well over the line), I'm pleased you think so. :) Thank you!

Yay! I think the final result looks fantastic.

Amusement: I've heard tales of a really good salon red hair dye job turning about this color when the person went swimming the same day - chlorine did awesome stuff with the chemicals that were still activated and energetic.

Enjoy :-D
