I'm beginning to wonder if I'm cut out for the bleach-and-dye crowd.

Two separate attempts now, with my brother's help. The first time I didn't rinse out the bleach well enough, and ended up with hair part-purple, part-brown, and part-frosted. The second, the blue dye didn't take *at all* (despite leaving it on for a good forty minutes), so I have hair ranging from yellow to very light blue to (mostly) variations on seaweed green. Not the most encouraging results, especially given how much the bleach and dye costs.

Honestly, I'm sort of tempted to just bleach it once more and leave it - because my hair's been dyed a couple of times before, the roots start out blonde and then slowly fade into quite a nice foxy red. It's a cool effect, and no one's going to think it's natural, which was sort of the point of the exercise.

But still...I want my blue hair, dammit. Or pink. Or purple. Other people have it, so why can't I?

Back when I finally got the chance to do a dye test on my hair--and watched it completely dissolve into nothing under just the bleach--I learned that blues and purples are the hardest colours to maintain in one's hair, most especially when bleaching is involved. The reason for it, as I recall, was something about the dye not being able to firmly latch onto the hair. No matter how long you leave the stuff in place before washing, it will wash out rapidly. Greens apparently manage to hold on longer than anything else, but I don't know if it's because that colour holds itself to the hair better or not.

For the hair dressers I've met who manage to maintain blue and purple dye jobs, they've only told me that it's a lot of work to keep the colour. Which (combined with how my hair simply goes into unbeing at the first drop of bleach) more or less shattered my hopes of having fun coloured hair. It's why I ended up doing the henna--because it didn't require bleaching and it faded out without a dye-line.

Once you get your normal colour back, you may want to try just adding the colour on that way. It may not come out as bright, but it may hold on longer. Also, Manic Panic colours apparently wash out faster than most, depending on the tone.

(Ask Brian if he remembers the pep band trip to Fairbanks, and Marty Woodrow, and how Marty's dye job quite literally went down the drain every time he took a shower)

I actually had far better luck with Manic Panic than with the current dye (Color Jamz I think) - that was what we used the first time, and the parts that bleached and then were rinsed properly came out great. But I didn't subject it to any real endurance testing. I may just order some Special Effects online - I've heard nothing but good things about the stuff, and it's what my brother uses.

I guess I'm lucky that my hair's thick enough to stand up to repeated bleachings. 'Cos I'm definitely going another round with the bleach today. No dishwater green hair for me, thanks. :)

You may recall the disappointing salon trips I had trying to get my own blue hair. I feel your pain.

Yeah, although at the salon you'd think they'd know what they were doing and could get it right on the first go. I at least have the "learning curve" excuse. :)

Of course, if they *do* know what they're doing, then I can say "This is way more work than I'm interested in" and can duck out early.

You could always buy a bitchin' wig.

The thought had occurred to me. If I bleach my hair enough times that may well be the best option...either that or rock the Natalie Portman style. :D
