Ian and I had hit the liquor section of Costco to test out his new membership, and he was looking for beer. So, of course, to tease him, I started singing the lyrics to "The Beer Song" ("What is the malted liquor?/What gets you drunker quicker?/What comes in bottles or in cans?/BEER!" sung to the tune of the "March of the Toreadors" from Carmen). After the obligatory smakkage had followed, we meandered towards the front of the section to pay for our purchases. There was one woman near the cashier looking at a bottle of white wine and wondering aloud what it tasted like, so I gave her some advice. Except I didn't just give her advice, I went on for about five minutes about the differences between Pinot Grigio as opposed to Pinot Noir, and the relative dryness and texture of the aftertaste of that vs. Cabernet Savingon vs. Merlot...I felt rather awkward afterwards, but she seemed grateful for the advice, and the woman at the cashier made some comment about how they should hire me to recommend wines to people.

So on the one hand, it seems that I'm a bit of a wine snob, but on the other, I will willingly sing "The Beer Song" in public. Within 10 minutes of each other, no less.

Does anyone else see a bit of a dichotomy here?

And on a side note, "dichotomy" is a most excellent word.
