missroserose: (Shake it!)

In the past, whenever I've told local people we want to move out of Juneau, I've generally gotten one of two reactions: "Why would you want to go anywhere else?" or "I totally hear you, I'll be leaving myself soon." (A subset of the second is the "I'd love to go, too, but my friends/family/job/home is here/it's so expensive to leave," which is understandable - one of the great things about this town is how extensive the social support network is. Comes of being such an isolated place, I guess.)

So for people in the first category, here's your answer. You may or may not have seen our first apartment; it was a pretty nice little place, maybe 700 square feet or so. Two bedrooms, one bath, older fixtures but well kept up. Very little counter space in the bathroom and kind of a smallish kitchen. Part of a 4-plex filled mostly with young professionals (at least until the noisy college kids moved in upstairs). The sort of place you'd imagine a mid-to-upper-middle-class couple starting a life together in - small, basic, but cozy. The rent? $1050 a month.

This is what the same rent will get you in Sierra Vista. Skylights! A fireplace! A two-car garage! Two bathrooms! A master suite! Big landscaped backyard with patio! Giant kitchen for hosting dinner parties! A whole house of our own! (I've already sent an email expressing interest; we'll see if the owners reply.)

Juneau, we love you and you're a great place with many wonderful qualities, but we think it's time we moved on. It's not you, it's us. We've just outgrown the relationship, that's all. Can we still be friends?

Of the very few things I miss about Juneau, Seong's is toward the top of the list, clustered with Pel Meni and Bullwinkles and Pizzeria Roma. A close second cluster is the Shrine of St Therese, Sandy Beach, and the Mendenhall (glacier). I still, in all of my searching, have not found anyone who can make sweet Mongolian Beef like Seong does. *le sigh*

On the upnote, yes, there are places that for the same price as Juneau dwellings you get far more.
By the by, when are you planning to bust out of there? If you happen to be driving through here on a day that I am free we could perhaps grab a meal together.

We're blowing this popsicle stand at the end of October, or such is the plan, anyway. We're likely going to be flying, though, so the meal will have to wait until we take a road trip. (Which probably won't be long - I'm guessing we'll be all, "Hey, look! Roads! We should take a trip!" :)

Biglandscaped backyard! Which is paved in rocks because grass won't grow here!

(I actually like that, very local-environmentally appropriate)

I kind of figured you might.

How are you enjoying Boise?

Oh, sorry - I was under the impression you'd gotten there already. Let me know how you like it when you're there. :)

700 sqft? Really? My studio is like 625. 800$/mo in downtown Seattle. Jeuneau's crzy pricey.

I'm exaggerating a bit, it was probably closer to 850 square feet or so. But it was still tiny, and the layout didn't help much. Juneau is pretty crazy pricey.
