It starts out with the little things. Like when I go downstairs after one of my roommates has cooked a meal and forgotten to clean up, and think how nice it would be if I had my own kitchen so that I could keep it relatively clean. Or when I head to Safeway for a midnight snack run with Ian, and catch myself looking at the "Fall Harvest Centerpiece" display and thinking about how that'd go so well with my kitchen table (yes, I theoretically do have a (rather nice) kitchen table, though it's currently being stored with my mother). Or when I want to work on my sewing, but my roommates have taken over the table downstairs and there's not enough light there anyway so I end up squished into a corner of my room (there's just barely enough room for a sewing machine on top of the dresser, and an ironing board by the window).
I find myself longing for a home of my own. Doesn't have to be a house in suburbia with a yard (an apartment would be fine), doesn't have to even be that big...Just a place that I can make nice and that will *stay* nice. With space for my sewing projects and a Christmas tree and anything else I feel like putting up.
Unfortunately, due to monetary constraints, chances are I'm going to have to consign myself to living with roommates for the next several years. And as most people probably know, roommates don't tend to be very tidy (unless they're utter and total neat freaks, which brings up a whole new set of problems). So I'll have to content myself with making my room nice, and wait to decorate a whole apartment.
