I’m thinking of undertaking an experimental project that would require a server to which I could regularly upload mp3 files (to be downloaded by other people later, theoretically). I’ve noticed a few people using MegaUpload for such a purpose – does anyone here have any experience with them, either as a content distributor or consumer? I’ve seen some complaints about their mandatory wait times and bandwidth prioritizing; are there other places that provide better service? I don’t need huge chunks of bandwidth, just a few megabytes at a time.

Personally, I'm fond of box.net
Mostly because it lets you play the mp3 file from your browser.

Hm, interesting. It seems like a bit overkill for something as simple as an upload/download pattern, but if they give good service it's certainly worth considering.

What's the legality of these mp3s? How widely-advertised do you want this service to be?

*laughs* Always a good question on the Internet. Hopefully completely legal, although I wasn't planning on advertising per se. :)

Google or some other free hosting entity may be an option as well, if it's not too much trouble to code up a basic page.

I could certainly host something like that, in that case.

Okay, I'll keep that in mind, thanks. :)

You might also consider using the FileZilla FTP server on your own home computer. It's what I do for tightly controlled downloads, so I can give out individual logins to specified individuals, each with their own selection of files and optionally some that are available to everyone.

Probably a bit overkill for what I'm looking for, but thanks. :)

Or you could start a torrent of the file on your home computer, also a bit of overkill, but easier to distribute and set free.

An option if those are the goals. Seems more like limited and perhaps controlled distribution is desired here.

well, I'm rather fond of yousendit.com, though IIRC, they have size limitations and time limits that I got annoyed with...

I've used MegaUpload a few times, and have no qualms with it...it works well. The security isn't exactly the greatest so I wouldn't suggest putting top secret files onto it. :P
