Brian and I will be covering World Beat on KRNN tomorrow night from 7 to 9 PM AKST (one hour behind Pacific). As always, you can listen online via their website, and if world music is your thing, post your request! I'm also open to more general suggestions - my world music collection right now consists mostly of Mediaevael Baebes, Lorenna McKennitt, Dead Can Dance, and a couple of Cafe Del Mar compilations. So there'll probably be a good amount of digging through the KTOO library as well.

There's a song that Mediaevael Baebes did with Delerium that sounds rather cool; Aria".
I won't be able to tune in, life being what it is, but if you can play that one, woo! Beyond that, as far as Worldly music goes, can't go wrong with Manu Chow (I probably spelled that wrong) and Chapeaumelon has some pretty good stuff as well.

Bah. I far preferred it when tomorrow was Saturday, and I could attend. Now somebody's gone and stuck and extra day in, and tomorrow's Friday and I'll be at dinner.

It's not like you're under any obligation to attend. :P I would, however, be interested in your musical suggestions (as always).

'Obligation'? Bah. More like 'Looking Forward'. I don't race home when you guys are on the radio because I think I have to. (:

Hrmmm. Yeah, most of my 'world' stuff is fusion, but I'm happy to make suggestions.

Transglobal Underground and Natacha Atlas (they often work together) are both good, although I'm fonder of their earlier work. One of my favorite lines ever is in Delta Blues: “Egyptian pharaohs fell from the sky, fell from the sky and played the blues.” Ofra Haza does similar work--turning Yemeni folk songs into Israeli pop.

The Pogues are, I will come out and say it, the best Irish music (not Celtopunk or 'bands that are from Ireland) ever. One of their band members sang back up and hit himself on the head with a beer tray. (When he had to learn an instrument or lose his job, he took up the pennywhistle.) If I Should Fall from Grace with God is a suggested track.
(Depending on where in the World it's decided World Music comes from...)

Later Paul Simon, or Peter Gabriel (Especially the soundtrack for Last Temptation of Christ) or just about anything on his 'Real Music' label, Afro-Celt Sound System (especially the Release album), all take that 'African sound' and put it on display.

If they have the soundtrack for Prisoner's Song or Latcho Drom, both of those are excellent and not at all fusion, but they tend to be slow, long, and mournful.

There's the Romanypunk bands, like Golem! or Devotchka or Gogol Bordello or Counterfeit Gypsies, with violins and guitars and tabourines. Gipsy Kings are more flamenco than Roma, but they should still count as 'World'.

I've never heard Tamir Muskat, but I have an album that I really like called "J.U.F." which is Tamir Muskat and Gogol Bordello.

I'm just getting into Bhangra, which is an energetic Indian genre that's showing up a lot in Bollywood films. I don't have enough famliarity to give any names though.

I've found tracks from Asian Dub Foundation that I really liked, like Colour Line or Rebel Warrior.

I've only heard one Manu Chao track (Me Gustas Tu) but I second the earlier recommendation.

There's a band called Stellamara that does that sort of locationless world sound that DCD does, and they're good.

...Wow. Okay, I have quite a few compliations of Indian, North African, or Middle Eastern club music. (And specialties like Bangladeshi.)

Bedouin Soundclash, Martyn Bennett, Cheb Mami, DJ Cheb i Sabah, Niyaz, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Raichid Taha (especially his cover of Rock the Casbah), and Warda to name a few.

Does Jimmy Cliff count as 'World Music'? Because any time you can play Harder They Come a fairy gets its wings.

The Ukranians aren't really from the Ukraine but those are traditional instruments they're playing. I like 'Batyar' best.

A lot of Brave New Combo falls easily into the world music area, especially given that they specialize in polkas.

Does any of this help? Or is this like stepping into the shower with you and turning on the water and saying 'just grab the drops you like'? I tried to put the most important ones at the top so you read them before your eyes glazed over.

Got any Mongolian throat singing?

It's Tuvan, actually. And I don't have any recorded, but Brian and I saw some throat-singers in concert - that's probably one of the most amazing things I've ever heard someone do with their voice. :)
