I attended a Master Class last week, taught by a classical soprano, and one of the first things she told me was that, when performing, I needed to ditch the glasses. Apparently a singer's eyes are the most expressive part of her face, and glasses obscure them.

I've spent most of my life wearing glasses, with only occasional breaks (until I got tired of futzing with contacts), so I was at first hesitant to imagine doing so regularly. But I took a couple of quick pictures with my MacBook webcam to compare, and I think I see what she means. After thinking about it a bit, I realized that that's probably why I like my glasses so much - they give me a sense of being one step removed from other people, and without them I look more vulnerable.

But I'm not the best person to judge, so I'm asking you fine folk: Imagine I'm dressed up for a performance here (instead of just going to the Viking), and tell me which picture makes more of a connection with you, the audience member.

Wow. Even with my bias, the difference is pronounced. The glasses do form a barrier between you and the audience. (Which can be advantageous at times, but probably not when performing.)

I assume you mean that you're biased towards the glasses? Either way, thanks. :)

I am definitely biased toward glasses. I think girls in glasses are wicked hot, even if making out with glasses on is a pain in the ass.

It's not that bad, you just have to wash off the smears from nose-grease afterwards. >.>

You know what astounds me? Of the guys I've made out with, the only one who never smeared my glasses, was a guy who didn't wear glasses. I think I'm good about not smearing others' glasses, because I know how to avoid it...how the fuck does a non-glasses-wearer not smear when the guys with glasses almost invariably do? *shrug*

I have less trouble with the smearing and more with bumping into the frame, especially if multiple parties involved are wearing them.
There is little that is less romantic than stabbing somebody with their own glasses frame while you're trying to get a good snog in.

It's amazing what one finds on random LJ accounts. My vote is definately to go without the glasses. You are a mighty attractive woman, and the glasses really do remove you from that intimate contact that a performer needs.

Thats ny 2.2 cents worth anyways.

*laughs* And I literally just put this up a minute ago. Thanks for taking the time to respond. It's good to get the opinion of people who don't know me, since that's likely going to comprise the largest part of my (theoretical) audience.

And thank you for the compliment, too. :)

You are welcome. I believe compliments should be handed out when deserved. :)

Oh, and I spotted the pics you posted on http://fuzzysquid.com/LJ.php. It's a page that brings up the last 50 pics posted on LJ. Word of warning tho, it can be very NSFW.

I have taken the time to read your bio, and have taken up your invite to add. Hope thats OK.

Not a problem! Everyone's welcome, so long as they follow Wheaton's Law (http://arstechnica.com/articles/culture/pax-technica-surviving-the-show.ars/4). ;)

That page looks way too fascinating for its own good. Although it may explain some of the weird/random comments I've occasionally gotten on picture posts.

Bwuhahaha... I like that. I think i'll steal that reference. Goodness knows there are folks out there that need to apply that in real life.

She's not only mighty attractive, she's also witty and smart and has a wicked sense of humor. (The 'mighty attractive' for the brain.) If you get the chance, try to make her laugh; it's a delightful sound.

Of that I have no doubt. Bit hard from the opposite end of the planet, but you just never know. :)

The lack of glasses does open your countenance a little more, but if I was coming to see you sing, I think I'd be more engaged in the performance if you had your glasses on. It's novel, I think - most other singers I've seen don't wear glasses. The glasses may act as a barrier, but it's the sort of barrier that will keep my eyes and my brain on the performer.

Without--especially if I'm looking at you from further away, the glasses SERIOUSLY obscure your eyes.

I know what you mean about liking them though, I feel naked without my thick plastic frame glasses, it bugs me out. I wore wire frames for a little while and even that made me feel a little vulnerable.

I do love your glasses though, they're sexy and give you a bit more mystery. But if you're going for a connection, without.

(I would like to note that I appreciate the irony of my stating this using an icon in which I'm wearing a hat that completely obscures my eyes...maybe I'm just sleep deprived and crazy though)

As your Mother I confess that I find you beautiful in both images! As an Attorney I respond: Depends on what you want to accomplish in the performance! As a professional vocalist of long standing I say: The Soprano was Right Babe, Ditch the Glasses!!! Love, Mum

I'm with Mum. Ditch the glasses on stage, but I think you look great in glasses for everyday life. :)

Without glasses is better. Especially at a distance on stage. Great pics!

I think you lose years without them, to the point of looking, IMO, barely eighteen. And they don't overcome my bias to the glasses ;)

But I'll defer to those who know better. *g*

Come to think of it, you're right. But I guess that could be good, depending on the role.

A couple of things I noticed while not staring obsessively at your pictures (and really I am on my way to bed):
The first photo, your head seems to be canted downward, and your face seems darker. I suspect these may be aspects of the camera and the scene rather than "Am I wearing glasses or not."

Hmm...you look gorgeous in both cases. But for performances, it's probably best not to wear the glasses.
