It would seem that someone's finally convinced me to download Skype. I'm of two minds about it; on the one hand, I'm not a big phone chatter, and I generally prefer the privacy of text messaging, but on the other, dude! Video phones! Haven't we all wanted these since we were kids watching The Jetsons?

Anyway. If you want to have a chat, let me know. We'll see what we can work out. :)

Let us know what you think -- I've got a faculty member who swears by it and wants to integrate it more into educational settings (as we have affiliated programs over the sea), but I've got a face for radio and I abhor communication just on principle. But I have a sinking feeling I'll have to use it to one degree or another....

I've been moderately impressed with it so far. The video can get a bit laggy, especially two-way, but that probably has less to do with the program itself and more to do with the crappy bandwidth in Juneau. Fortunately you don't have to use the video functionality. And the audio quality is remarkably good, although keep in mind the last time I tried using VoIP was eight years ago. Over dialup. From Barrow. So I'm not sure I'm best equipped to compare. :)

I've used the software, in limited format, for quite some time. I generally find the audio quality better than a cel phone, and as Rose has mentioned the video can be disabled when bandwidth is an issue. (Which it might be in cross-oceanic conversations.)
There's a 'conference call' option that I haven't yet tried, due mostly to lack of necessity.

Text IMs have a lot of advantages, but I also like the intimacy (tone of voice, expression, body language) of seeing and hearing the other person.

Downside: clothes required

(not that I'm a big one for computing naked, but I know Skypers that do themselves up to converse.)
