Some of you might've heard through the news that Alaskans are getting gigantic Permanent Fund Dividend checks this year. Thanks to a suggestion from our governor, and some really quite amusing headbutting from our state legislature, we're all getting an extra $1200 with our already-record-high PFDs, ostensibly to offset high energy costs.

Given that Brian and I are renters, we don't have to worry about filling our oil tank. So our prize was a trip, which was great fun (and which I will finish blogging about soon, I promise). But I'm going to have a bit left over, and I was trying to think if there were any smallish (say, $200 or so) frivolous purchases I wanted to make.

Fortunately, Steve Jobs is one of the most obliging souls on the planet, for lo and behold: he came out with a new iPod Nano. I had one of the original black 4GB ones, and loved it, but unfortunately it went missing a year or so ago. And by then, they'd switched to the fat-Nano design, which was cute but didn't really inspire me much. But now, they're long and sleek again - and not just that, but they have bigger screens and accelerometers, so you can tip them on their side and have the image flip with it! Which is way cool. And I know this is totally gimmicky, but it still makes me laugh - when you want to shuffle your library, you just shake the thing and it skips to a random song. And they come in bright purple, now! And bigger sizes! And, best of all, the one I want is $200 exactly. How awesome is that?

So I was going to go ahead and order one when I was hit with an unexpected dilemma. See, I've never ordered one from their website (my first iPod was a refurbished model, and my second was from Fred Meyer), and suddenly I have to decide what I want to have laser-engraved on the back. Obviously there's any number of options, but after some thought I felt it would only be fair to pay tribute to the founder of the purchase. So, here's what I think I'll get:

That's awesome. Though I hear she wasn't wholly awful as a governor, its my understanding that's contingent on being compared to her predecessors... (yes, the first thing I did was call some friends in Wasilla).

When Palin was mayor of Wasilla, it was the only city in the state which charged rape victims for their rape kits. While technically legal, no other city or town in the state saw fit to do this, and the law was later changed to outlaw the practice.

In a town the size of Wasilla, there's no way she didn't know about it.

That's...special. I'm surprised my friend didn't know about that, but I think she was in Minnesota at the time.

Not coincidentally, the city of Wasilla apparently has a rape rate several times above the state average.

Yeah, Murkowski was a piece of work. He was almost a caricature of the old-boy buddy-buddy political system - everyone loved to hate him. Fortunately, they booted him out. Unfortunately, they put Palin in his place, almost a caricature of the new-wave anti-feminist family-values system.

To be fair, when she was running she promised to stay out of social issues while governing, and she's kept that promise. But I sincerely doubt that'll be the case if she wins the vice presidency. *shudders*

Not bad, not bad.

Lucky bitch. I'm a renter too, and I still have to fill my oil tank. :(
