I was feeling a bit stressed out about going back to work this morning. So on the way in, I stopped at KXLL (the public radio station I'm always listening to, currently doing a pledge drive) and gave them the (little) cash I had left from our vacation. It made me feel better - something about announcing down an apparently empty hallway "Hello? I would like to give you some money?" and hearing enthusiastic cheering in response before being warmly welcomed is encouraging. (Plus, I got stickers! I'll have to save them for when I finally get a laptop case.)
Then, coming into work, I was warmly welcomed again, and told how many of our callers were asking for me while I was gone, and asked about my trip, and the concert, and humored when I insisted on playing Finnish metal as a demonstration (and even got positive responses!).
Even if I'm not planning on being here that much longer, it's nice to feel like I have a real home where people miss me when I'm gone. Here's hoping I'll be able to find equally cool people wherever I end up.

Date: 2008-09-11 09:25 pm (UTC)Are you coming to the 80s Dance Party that KXLL is doing? I just found the greatest outfit for it and I'm stoked. It's all-ages, too, so you could bring your family or your grrl if you want. I'd love to meet her. :)
