If, like me, you live in a town with twenty different liquor stores, each of which only carries the same three mainstream brands of coconut rum (Bacardi Coco, Captain Morgan's Parrot Bay, and Malibu), here's a bit of advice: Buy the Parrot Bay, not the Malibu. The Parrot Bay is smooth and sweet - tastes like the inside of a Mounds bar. The Malibu is watery and harsh by comparison. It's okay for mixing if you don't have anything else, but the Parrot Bay is far, far better (and the same price!).

Just saying.

I agree. Malibu tastes like fake coconut flavoring, which makes sense since it contains artificial flavor...

Totally. I'm glad I only got a small bottle of it. I didn't have anything to compare it to before, but after I tried the Captain Morgan there wasn't any comparison.

Out of curiousity, have you tried Beachcomber coconut rum? I've read in a couple of places that it's a really darn good one, and cheap besides, but I couldn't find it anywhere in town.

Nope, haven't heard of it. My default flavored rums are the Cruzan ones; they use natural flavorings, and are well priced to boot.

Not sure if they're available in Alaska, though. :)

I've seen regular Cruzan, but none of the flavored ones. They'd probably be available in Anchorage. But every store in Juneau seems to order from the same supplier. If I do see it, though, I'll be sure to try it out.
