Fair warning: This is a Rose-Ranting-About-Stupidity-In-Politics post.

What this means: Normally, when I post about politics, I try to be fairly balanced in my analysis of the situation and give consideration to arguments for and against - there's already enough unthinking reactionary BS online, so I try not to add to it. This post, however, is me ranting, and it's in my personal blog, so I'm not going to try to be fair or balanced or thought-provoking. Because as much as I try to be an Eagle Scout in my online persona, I get pissed off like any other human being. So please bear with me, and/or skip this post if you don't feel like listening to me rant.

So without further ado...

As much as I love Alaska, I get so sick of living among the disproportionately high number of nutjobs we have here. I don't know if it's the geographical isolation or the cabin-fever-inducing winter weather or what, but Alaska hicks are truly a breed all their own. And, unfortunately, they're also the loudest folk here, which means that those of us who try to take a reasonable interest in politics and current events encounter their whining and complaining and ranting and raving far, far too often. Normally I try not to let it bug me, but it gets really frustrating - every time we make some progress legally (such as the recent Alaska Supreme Court decision to strike down the parental-notification-requirement for abortions for teenage girls), there's approximately a space of five nanoseconds in which to celebrate before the nutjobs start flooding the newspapers and online message boards with their Fox-News-inspired "OMG LEGISLATING FROM THE BENCH! WE ARE BECOMING MORAL-LESS SOCIETY!" drivel, none of which is true or often even relevant to the issue at hand. It's not even the fact that they disagree with me that I find so infuriating; it's the way they're so mouth-frothingly illogical and unreasonable about their point of view. There's simply no arguing with people like that.

I realize that's the joy of living in the United States with our Bill of Rights; freedom of speech also means freedom to be an ignorant, uninformed jerkweasel in public forums. But as much as I hate coming off as the intellectual elitist snob that I am, there are times that I really, truly wish we could ship all these people off to Antarctica. Let the penguins deal with them.

Hell, maybe *I'll* move to Antarctica. Start an intellectual elitist snob colony. Outside winter temperatures of -200 degrees Farenheit would be a small price to pay for isolation from such shining examples of humanity...

It's true. Plus, the weather's not quite as cold.
We do require an essay on a subject of the applicant's choice, at least 1000 words, and a photo of the applicant in a corset, but we are very accepting of political viewpoints unlike our own so long as they are well thought out and presented in a polite manner.

*laughs* Not quite as cold as Antarctica, hm?

I am intrigued and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

You really ought to come down and see our campus, as well. I'll put your name on our mailing list. And... I'll just put a little star next to it, so that we know you're special.

Hee. Next time I'm in the neighborhood, I'll be sure to make inquiries. ;)

I approve of this product and/or service.

Although my application would likely be denied on basis of the corset photograph.

Just figured you should have a picture of the dude you're talking to, here. (The shirt is one that I made/forced him to wear for the picture, and far from his usual style, but you get a general idea of physique. ;)

Suffice it to say, I somehow doubt the bear-type mixes well with corsetry...=D

Have you tried? It would probably be a non-traditional design that worked best for him, but still.

You should not move to Antarctica. You're in Alaska already. The lunatics are already used to the cold. :) Try moving to a nice tropical or even just warm island instead. :) Or to a really crowded big city to drive any who do move near you insane from having to deal with lots of people regularly. :)

I'm thinking Seattle, myself. When Brian and I were there for PAX, it was like coming home - "Obama for President - Unify America!" signs up everywhere, fliers for events like "Chic for Choice" (a haircut + hors d'oeuvre + champagne event benefiting Planned Parenthood that I totally would've participated in if I'd been in town), and a general feeling of "Yes, there *are* people like us in the world!" Hopefully we'll be heading there (or someplace like it) in a couple years...

I would like to put in my application to be allowed to live outside the greater community, ideally between y'all and the main point of access. Because I'd like to continue to put my antisocial tendencies to good use.

Heh. You can be the one who lives outside and feeds the penguins. =D

What about training the vicious attack penguins so the colony is not disturbed until an Antarctic utopia defended by laser beams is in place?

Although somebody would have to breed to make that worthwhile past the next 50 years or so...
