So winter appears to be beginning in earnest around here. The temperature's still too warm for snow as yet, but it's dark when we get up in the morning, close to dark when we head home from work, and gloomy and gray and pouring down rain during the daytime. Blech.
Anyway, one of the things I didn't notice about last winter until it was over was how depressed I was becoming. Admittedly, we did have a record snow year, which probably didn't help, but I'd really like to avoid that this time around, so I've been trying to think up options. So far those options consist of [a] get some exercise and [b] get some more exercise - I was a real couch potato last year, which I'm guessing was part of the cause. (Doing theatre will probably help, too, since it'll get me out of the house, but I'm fairly certain that staying active will help a lot.) Since we don't have a whole lot of room in our apartment, and I don't really feel like going outside when it's pouring down rain and/or snow all winter, I'm looking at external options. Unfortunately, this being Juneau, the options are fairly limited:
Option 1: Visit the local swimming pool regularly.
Pros: Swimming is easily my favorite form of exercise; it's relatively cheap ($45 or so for a monthly pass or $5 per visit); they have some exercise equipment and a sauna.
Cons: It's all the way downtown, which means a twenty-minute-plus drive (in the dark and often less-than-ideal weather conditions); not a lot of flexibility in the schedule, so I'd have to go at certain times; it's a community facility, so the equipment is somewhat worn down.
Option 2: Get a membership at Pavitt, the new health club that just opened here in town
Pros: Location is excellent (it's right in between work and home, so it takes about two minutes to get there); it's a brand-new facility so everything's state-of-the-art and in excellent shape; they have the only other pool currently in Juneau (although it's one of those "endless lap pools" so I'd have to try it out before making a judgment), a sauna, and a jacuzzi!; Adam also has a membership there so we could go work out together; club is open 24 hours so I can go on the spur of the moment (including at three in the morning, if I'm feeling insomniac).
Cons: Price - it's $70 a month with a one-year contract, which is a bit rich for my taste. If I can convince Brian to go in with me on a household membership, that'd knock the price down to $52.50, but that's still pretty big, especially when you're not certain whether you'd keep going all year. They have punch cards, but it's still $10 a visit.
So I don't know. I suppose I could just move the coffee table and do calisthenics in our living room, which would be convenient and free, but that's not really my favorite option for a number of reasons (not the least of which is all the things in our living room that could fall and/or break due to the floor jiggling). Plus it'd be nice to have somewhere to go to get out of the house, which would probably help a lot with the cabin fever aspect.
At the moment, I'm thinking I'll go down to Pavitt this weekend, get a day pass, and try things out for myself - so far I've only been in there a couple of times to put up flyers for the Arts & Humanities Council, so most of my impressions of the place have come from that plus their website. Plus then I can try out the endless pool and see if it's as fun as swimming in a regular pool.
ETA: Of course, no matter which option I pick, I should probably take precautions for this issue...
