I'm currently reading a paperback copy of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, which I'm enjoying immensely. So I'm thinking I'll pick up a hardback version for my collection.

After some research, I discover that I can get a hardbound edition used for roughly $4.

After further research, I find I can get a new-condition signed first edition/first printing in the special cream-colored dust jacket for $40.

(After even further research, I learn that there's a signed/numbered/slipcased/leatherbound special edition out there, but those change hands for several hundred apiece. And I'm not quite that book-crazy. Yet.)

So now the thrift-store-shopper part of me is arguing with the bibliophile part of me. I'll give you all two guesses as to who's winning. ;)

(Also, no one's signed up for my pay-it-forward thingy. Does no one want a gift from me? Or do they just not want the responsibility of having to do it themselves?)

It seemed like cheating for me to ask, since you'd be more paying it back.

Hmm...

Well, the rules don't seem to have covered this eventuality, so I'd say that this one's between you and your conscience. (Though I might point out that people aren't exactly clamoring for presents. Guess no one likes me after all. *sigh* ;)

Nice to know somebody went and read the entry all the way through, though...

I hang on your every word, my dear. (:
And if it's a matter of making certain that you feel loved, then I'll step up to the plate and say "Gimme prezzie!" Because that's how much love I have for you.

Why, thank you. I do feel loved now. =D

Incidentally, did you have any thoughts on the dilemma at hand, or does it just seem enough of a foregone conclusion that expression of opinion is unnecessary?

I'm not so much a collector that I feel the passion for the $40 first edition. But if $35 extra makes you $100 happy, then I think it's a wise investment.

Good point. That's usually how I try to think of it. Or in terms of "Is this worth half a day's worth of sitting at that desk answering phones?" (Fortunately I mostly like my job, so that's not usually a problem. ;)

Also, I'm stealing that icon - I've been needing a book-oriented icon lately, and that should suit my purposes perfectly. Mwahahahaa!

Hurrah! Just be sure to credit the creator. I'd go and look it up myself but it's too much work.

Sadly, it's the latter for me. I'd love to participate and to see what you'd come up with for me but I am woefully behind in interchanges already. I have a shirt and some books to send to [livejournal.com profile] fosfomifira that I've been trying to finish compiling and get sent out for more than a year. I kid you not! I am in slacker-guilt hell as it is. It's a way cool idea, though!

Ahh, slacker-guilt hell. I'm more than familiar with that particular place - and such a wonderful place it is, too. (Or at least, I assume it is, given how much time we slackers seem to spend there...=D)

Frankly, I was at a loss as to what I could make for you, so I didn't volunteer. :/

Mayhaps I could photochop something...

Actually, the idea is that you don't make something for me. Instead, you post a similar pay-it-forward offer in your blog, and you make something for the people who reply to that. =)

Which comes right back around to you, my one reader... Image

Okay, I exaggerate-- I have three readers. :p
