New books!

I know that I'm hardly alone in this feeling, but I really don't think there's anything quite as exciting as new books. Even when they're copies of books you've already read numerous times, it's still so much fun to open the shopping bag or the Amazon box and see them there, just waiting to be opened, smelled, caressed, and read.

On a related note, it's kind of funny how well and truly those signature Amazon boxes have permeated the American consciousness. A decade ago, Amazon didn't even exist in the minds of most folk. Now, I'm willing to bet you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't get a little thrill of anticipation when an Amazon box shows up on their doorstep.

I'm still trying to decide which is the better feeling - when the box contains new copies of old favorites that you can't wait to reread, or when the box contains something you've never read before but heard many good things about?

Imagine this...once upon a time, there was a World Wide Web in which Google did not exist.

I remember those days. They were not happy days. They were days in which actually FINDING something that you wanted to find in a search engine, was a matter of luck as much as anything else.

I remember that. I sometimes think I was of the last generation to go to high school before the technology explosion - for me, it was a novelty to be able to send email. And I didn't know a single other person my age who owned a cell phone.

I have to say, I rather prefer things the way they are today. I'm such an information junkie; I love being able to instantly find out basic factoids about pretty much anything that strikes my fancy. Plus, if I have a snatch of song in my head, I can type the lyrics in and figure out what song it is without it driving me crazy all day. =D

I know exactly what you mean. There are few things on earth that smell as good as new books!

My order from Amazon arrives tomorrow containing two copies of my newest. Although I get copies from the publisher, I always order a few from the internet -- often that is the first time I get to see the finished product.

That's right, I hadn't yet congratulated you on your latest work. So, congratulations! =) I'll have to order a copy once my finances recover from the latest round of expenditures...

I got one of these as a graduation gift: Sony PRS-500 Reader System (http://www.learningcenter.sony.us/assets/itpd/reader/)

You can't imagine how insanely happy I am to have around 500 books at my fingertips wherever I go. I've been on a downloading spree for eBooks lately and it's excellent.

That is pretty darn nifty. I tried the ebook thing back when I had a Palm Pilot, and I found it works pretty well for fanfiction and such. But when it comes to actual, y'know, books, I much prefer the dead-tree ones. Reading words off a screen is fine, but it just doesn't compare in my mind to the weight of an actual physical tome in your hands...though I will happily admit that the weight of said tomes makes them impractical for hauling around 500 at a time. =D

I got tired of hauling 800-1000 page books around at work, this fits in my pocket and I can read while I'm on the phone with the morons over at Comcast.

That sounds most handy. I'll have to recommend something along those lines to Brian...he's been spending a remarkable amount of time listening to hold music lately.

I gave birth to such a beauty!
