Went rock climbing again today; if I can keep up the once-or-twice a week pace for a few months I'll be pretty happy with myself. Today was special, though, because I managed to make it up a course that had previously defeated me; while my forearms are burning as a result, it's a good kind of burn. (Incidentally, I didn't even know that you could have muscle in your forearms until I realized that mine were getting stiff...I suppose that's a good sign?)
I'm told that tomorrow (the 19th) is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Am toying with the idea of trying it at work, but I don't really think my pirate vocabulary is large enough to supply me for a whole day. Plus, I have a feeling Wade might look at me askance if I answered the phone "Arr, this be the good ship Jeffus & Williams, what can we do for ye?" Maybe if I get a call from a telemarketer...
And speaking of (or like!) pirates, Adam sent me an amusing video on how to talk like a pirate, done in exactly the same manner as those old educational movies everybody had to watch for health class in elementary and middle school - complete with the outdated 70's clothing and hairstyles, and the scratches and pops that were inherent in those ratty old filmstrips. Even if you don't need the lesson, it's an amusing thing to watch.
On a more serious note, I found a pretty fascinating article on the differences between conservatives and liberals, and why what seems like common sense to one side is absolute anathema to the other. It also has some good suggestions for liberals like me in terms of what we can emphasize when explaining our positions to people in order to make them seem less scary, and therefore help people be less paranoid. (Not that it would make any difference to the likes of, say, Ann Coulter, but I sincerely doubt the vast majority of conservatives are that out of touch with reality.) I seriously think this article has done more to help me understand conservative thought than all the various times I've argued with such folk. I sincerely hope that more people read it and that (as a result) they stop being quite so paranoid. It really worries me sometimes, how polarized and reactionary everyone seems to be in politics today - maybe I'm wrong, but I figure it can't always have been that people continually jumped on the slightest remark made that disagreed with their viewpoint. Can it?
