This morning I've been feeling stressed out for a number of reasons. For one thing, I made the mistake of starting out the morning with a double-shot mocha on an empty stomach, figuring it'd make me feel more alert and focused. It did, but also had the side effect of making me feel jittery and irritable, which was exacerbated by the fact that the phone kept ringing and people kept wanting things from me every five minutes. So...yeah. Don't think I'm going to do that again.

When I got back from lunch, however, there was an email in my box titled "Gouranga", with some message to the effect of "Call out 'Gouranga' and be happy". I was a bit puzzled by it since it didn't have any links or attachments and didn't seem to be advertising anything, so I did a Google search on "Gouranga". Apparently it's a Sanskrit phrase meaning "golden-limbed", used by Hare Krishnas as a way of telling people to be happy. This particular spam has achieved a bit of noteriety; one person has claimed responsibility for them, saying he's just an enthusiastic individual who wants people to be happy. It's as good a reason as any for spamming people, I guess - and certainly much nicer to get in my inbox than the usual low-interest-mortgage-to-refinance-your-penis-enlargement junk I normally get. Oddly enough, it made me feel a bit better to know that someone out there wants me to be happy. 'Course, it probably also helps that the phone's quieted down and I've put some food in my stomach.

Just as kind of a funny observation - the last couple weeks, I've noticed a bit of a trend. When Brian and I went to eat at Doc Water's a week or two ago, it was filled with its usual patrons (people who're a little higher up the social chain than "salt-of-the-earth" but still consider themselves easygoing because hey, we're Alaskans), watching the World Cup and cheering on their favorite team. A day or two later, I went by the Viking, which is more of a true blue-collar salt-of-the-earth type of place, and it was filled with its usual patrons, watching the World Cup and cheering on their favorite team. This last weekend, Brian and I went to the Silverbow for breakfast, and the Back Room was full of their usual hippy-dippy types in dreadlocks and peasant skirts - all watching the World Cup and cheering on their favorite team.

It strikes me that as much as people like to segregate themselves into discrete groups, we all have much more in common with each other than we might normally think. =)
