Quickest turnaround I've ever had on a letter to the editor - submitted it yesterday morning, and they printed it this morning. I made some comment in the subject line of my email that this was likely going to be the first letter of many on the subject, and the woman from the Juneau Empire who did the confirmation call told me that I was right, and she was glad that mine was so well written. Given some of the incoherent rants I've seen on the subject (abortion seems to be one of those issues that takes people down to third-grade-level debating), I don't envy her her job over the next few weeks.

I especially like the title they gave my letter; that should cause a bit of stir. *evil grin*

Planned Parenthood can prevent abortions

We'll see if anyone comes up with some well-thought-out responses over the next few weeks...

Mind cutting & pasting it here? That sire requires a login... :(

You could probably find a generic login on bugmenot.com, but the text of the letter is in my previous entry - look for the big block of italics. ;)

Oh! Duh.

It's Thursday. My brain shuts off on Monday morning, and doesn't really wake up until Friday. :)

That's fantastic. I have to agree, yours is one of the better-written notes on a subject that turns most people into babbling incoherant idiots. Keep us posted on what all falls out from this, and congrats!

I'm not sure that simply getting a letter published in the local paper is an achievement that merits congratulations, but thanks anyway. :)

I'll certainly keep track of the fallout from this...both online and on my wall here at work (I already have a printout of my original letter tacked up.) Should be interesting...

Well it's impressive to someone who has hever done it, how's that? :-)

I'm curious as to whether your letter will evoke sounds of support or people telling you precisely why you are going to hell. I'm betting on the vocal opposition--but I don't know your area from anything other than what you've written about it, so I don't know if that opposition will be a minority or not.

To be honest, I'm a bit unsure myself. Judging from election results, Juneau seems to be the one bastion of anything resembling liberalism in all of Alaska - we're a pretty red state for the most part. But it's been shown time and again that conservative people are much more likely to respond to surveys, speak up in forums, etc. than liberals are - probably because they have more at stake (wanting things to stay as they are), whereas it's harder to articulate what kinds of changes liberals want, and most of 'em figure that if nothing changes, they're not going to be any worse off. So I'm guessing there'll be quite a few letters of opposition, but (hopefully) a couple of well-thought-out supports as well.

This response brought to you by "Generalized Statements, Inc. - because it's so much easier to understand large groups than individuals!" =)

That's great that you were able to get in the paper. Keep writing to them -- your name is memorable, and I bet a dollar someone's gonna offer you a job as a columnist. ;)

That'd be cool, but I have a feeling I'd be a bit too lazy/apathetic to be a columnist. There are only a couple of issues that I care enough about to actually write about. Though I suppose they could always syndicate my blog or something. :)

If you did that, would Mr. Jerry Brown get his own subcolumn?

Possibly, although I have a feeling audiences would eventually get tired of a columnist whose vocabulary consisted of "Meow", "Mrrrowr", "MrooOOWWR", and "PURRRRRRR". =)
