Haven't heard back from Mr. Fraze yet, but I do have a line on a potential job that sounds interesting. One of the many wildlife tour companies here in Juneau is looking for an expediter. According to the woman I talked with this morning, it'd be a full time position with a fair amount of overtime, and while she wasn't able to give me an exact figure, she said the company minimum wage is $10 an hour, which was the area I was aiming for. Basically I'd be shuttling people back and forth, making runs to Costco/the recycling center/etc., and doing various other gofer-type tasks. Apparently the company is still pretty small (though growing fast) and informal, and she sounded really friendly - if everyone else is as nice as she is it'd be a great place to work. Plus I'd get to be out in the sun (or rain, whichever) instead of sitting in an office/library. And I'd get to be around the water, too - one of the things I'd likely be doing would be stocking the tour boats.

It sounds like an excellent position. The only real problems I could think of were scheduling-related: although the bulk of the job will be during the daytime, I'd probably be working early morning/evening and weekend hours as well. But then, that's sort of the case with any tourism job; if I could negotiate one weekend day off per week, I could make out all right. The other possible problem would be the whole later-season scheduling question; if they need someone who can stay through the whole tourist season, there might be a conflict with school. However, when I inquired about that, the woman didn't seem to think it'd be that big of a problem; the workload is apparently somewhat lighter towards the end of the season, so we might be able to work something out. Also, she said they'd been thinking of hiring one fulltime and one parttime expediter, so if that was the case they'd have someone who could take over for me. Or I could work parttime through the whole season and do another job as well (one of the local chiropractic clinics is looking for a part time receptionist, which might even be something I could do while in school as well...)

Anyway, I'm going in for an interview for the expediter position tomorrow. Wish me luck, everyone; whichever way it goes, it looks like there'll be plenty of options. If things work out right, I might even be able to save enough for that trip to Anchorage that Brian and I want to take.

In other news, "Landscape of the Body", the production my acting class is putting together, is almost ready to go. We've been doing anywhere from four to six hour rehearsals the past couple of weeks, and yesterday we ran the show for the first time with lights and sound and everything. It actually went pretty darn well. Dress rehearsal is tonight, and then we're performing Thursday/Friday/Saturday at 8:00 PM in Hendrickson 113. Anyone who's in town is hereby asked very nicely to come and see it; Folk Fest is this same week which means we probably won't have a whole lot of audience and I'd rather not be performing to an empty room. It's pay-as-you-can, so whatever's in your pocket will get you in. Plus it's kind of an interesting play.

So come and see me perform, dammit. =P

Anyway, back to homework, I suppose...

Fingers crossed on the job hunt. If nothing else, "expediter" is a very cool job name, and if you're appropriately cagey on the resume, you could probably make it sound like anything from contract assassin to defensive linebacker.

And hooray for the joy of theatre. There's nothing quite so wonderful as being an essential part of a collaborative and creative process -- and occasionally watching it all fall apart from the inside. Break a leg.

Contract assassin...hm. Maybe if I added "Experience with firearms and throwing weapons of various kinds" to the "Skills & Experience" part. =)

And I have some peripheral experience with shows falling apart - my second semester of college, I had a roommate who was stage managing a doomed production. And trying to take something like 16 credits. And trying to get a thesis done so she could graduate. Said roommate nearly killed me (and several other people) partway through that semester, but fortunately she got on Paxil and didn't.

It was rather amusing when she got home from the cast party drunk and stoned and started hitting on me, though. Ian (my boyfriend at the time) walked in on her trying to give me a shoulder rub and said "Uh...am I interrupting something?"

Anyway, this production is looking a bit better than that, fortunately. Thanks for the vote of confidence. ;)

Hee. My thesis production had less than a month from getting the green light to start auditions to striking the set. (Had to move it up a semester because mine was the only play ready to go a semester early.) And the other big shows of the year had already been cast, so I got the not-ready-for-prime-time players. Great time. A series of minor to major catastrophes all the way through.

I got off pretty easy on the whole shebang -- one of my actresses, on each night of the three-night run, had a trauma befall her: grandmother dies, flunks test, boyfriend breaks up with her. She kept threatening to snap like a dry twig but held it together. Ah, the healing power of the limelight.

Personally, I think "Made things happen." is the best potential description for activities as an expediter. That said, "contract assassin or defensive linebacker" damn near got my keyboard doused with my mouthful of water...

And she was trying to do more than the backrub...

Whoooo! on the potential job. Gofer-ing can actually be pretty fun, even more so when you're working with good people (yay! first-hand experience...).
Also? That really does sound like a bloody awesome job. If you don't take it, I just might have to. No... wait... I still can't drive... Blast!
Good luck, Rose! You'll blow 'em away at the interveiw.

Heee. Please see e-mail. Will do my damndest to get to see one of them (although it's looking to end up being Saturday).
