So long as Hotmail is continually reporting Hollywood gossip instead of anything important in the news section of the "Today" page, God knows I'll have continuous fodder...

Anyway. Today's stupid headline: "Jessica Alba keeps clothes on". No, really? Last I checked, it was generally considered to be the societally acceptable thing to do. I actually find it kind of sad that our obsession with celebrities and their states of (un)dress has gotten to the point where it's actually news if an actress doesn't take her clothes off in a movie. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against nudity (or clothedness); but the fact that enough people have clicked on this link to make it considered news-worthy is really kind of...sad. I mean, what's the big deal either way?

Yay for voyeuristic puritanical societies, I guess...

"Jessica Alba keeps clothes on"

Well, that's more newsworthy than anything else I've seen today.

Yay for voyeuristic puritanical societies, I guess...

To sane people this would seem to be a contradiction. Meh.

Of course, I'm still waiting for Britney to get her reality check.

It would seem a contradiction at first glance, but a brief study of history will show you that any society that puts strict bans on anything (especially sex) will create a whole subculture of nosy people whose entire lives revolve around finding out if their neighbors are following all the rules that they're supposed to. Look at Victorian England and Puritanical America for examples. Nathanial Hawthorne loved writing about the voyeuristic tendencies of the latter...

As I understand it (Not having seen the actual article) one of the reasons this is actually of import is that the character she is portraying spends most of the comic half naked (she's an exotic dancer).

Yes, I get that part. What I don't get is why, exactly, this is news either way. So what if she's naked or not?

For the record, though, she is pretty damn hot in the movie. =)

By comparison, didn't Rebecca Romijn become effectively naked to play the clothed-in-comics Mystique in X-Men? (I think so - I know nothing about the comics version of Mystique outside of that.) Yet I don't remember a headline for her going in the opposite direction.

So you're right, we've reached that point in the world where it's just noteworthy that someone's got clothes on.

I suddenly feel overdressed...

I can top that...

In the job posting compilation ASRC puts out every week, there was a posting on page two for an oilfield post, and I swear to God I am not making this up...

Vibrator Operator.

The only thing that would be funnier is if the list had requirements and one of them was "Must provide own tools."

It's marketing. Blame the marketing people. "Sin City" lost over 50 percent of it's box office in week 2..considering they only made 28 million in week one, they have to keep the movie in the public conciousness somehow. So the publicists for the studios "plant" stories like that with media outlets, to keep the hype going, to milk "Sin City" for every possible cent it can get. What more can be said about the film? Logically, the bonehead PR people gravitate towards the T and A factor.
