Been trying to keep the political stuff to a relative minimum, considering that (1) I have very little to say that someone else hasn't said already, and (2) most of the people who read this will already agree, anyway. But I came up with an idea while discussing things with Monica today that I just have to share.

Look at the last couple of elections. In 2000, we had a dumbass vs. a dude with no charisma at all. In 2004, we had pretty much the same....Kerry was a bit better than Gore, but not too much. And really, most of the people who don't follow politics probably couldn't tell the difference between them, so the dumbass coasted through on the incumbency advantage (albeit much more closely than most presidents). After these last two, I think we all deserve a can't-lose election. And it's about time we got a woman or a minority group member in there, anyway. Fortunately, we just happen to have two candidates who fit the bill and both have *sense*.

On that note, I hereby nominate Colin Powell for the Republican ticket and Hillary Clinton for the Democratic ticket in 2008.

What, you don't figure on Jeb Bush for the Republicans in '08?

...

Excuse me. Didn't mean to shudder in fear and loathing so loudly.

I'm with you on Colin Powell. I'd love to see that man as President. Hillary's been president long enough though :)

I can't wait for when Colin and Hillary run against each other.

All the hicks are going to go "oh great now who's the lesser of two evils? The black guy, or the woman?"

Yeah, though I think they'd be less polite about it.

Unfortunately, I don't think Colin Powell's in the running. I somehow doubt he wants to be president. Not that I blame him, after the shit he's seen go down.

I can just hear Michael Savage going on about 'em both now... And no, I'm not going to transcribe that. Some words and slurs I just won't use, even in jest.

I would argue that this is why he should be President -- the guy doesn't want to be the leader, and (therefore) probably isn't going to fall into the usual political traps.

For my part, I wish -- really wish -- John McCain hadn't whored himself out to the Bush administration in the last few months. When you remember how badly he was hurt by Karl Rove's push polling in the 2000 primaries, you can't even begin to fathom how he could lick Bush's boots this year.

Cynically, I think it's because he was toeing the party line in an attempt to get the nomination in 2008.

A real shame, though. Aside from the one credibility lapse, I think McCain's an honorable man -- and exactly the kind of politician this country needs right now. Republican enough to satisfy most of the right; Democratic enough to satisfy most of the left; and decent enough to be worth voting for.

It's a royal goddamn shame that he didn't win the primaries in 2000, or -- right about now -- I think we'd all be a lot happier.

Right now I'm hearing some democratic rumblings towards "Hillary/Obama" 2008.

Nothing about the Senate race, though, Rose? I got calls from the Knowles campaign every hour on the hour for 3 weeks. (During buisness hours, that is)

I did not vote for knowles just for that reason.

I was told once that people really wanted Colin Powell to run, around the time after the Gulf War, but he strongly resisted. Hillary seems like the obvious next choice Dem. choice, but people hate her SO much, it's risky.
