...why, why, WHY a person (who's always struck me as fairly intelligent with a lot of potential) would be utterly happy to be a father at 21?

I had a similar reaction, although not quite so extreme/angry. He seems to have a decent thing going for him, a bit of voc-ed, and a plan. And is set to be making 3 times what I am. The punk.

Well, that helps. I honestly didn't get to talk to him for more than a minute, so I didn't hear that he had a plan. So I guess that's good.

Just keep in mind, though, while jobs in Barrow pay extremely well, there's no guarantee you're going to be consistently employed from year to year...

Water treatment facility. Starting with wastewater, and if he's not a flake probably moving to fresh water treatment.

Go him, for having a planned career. Water treatment/recycling is actually something Ive been pondering trying to get into for a while.

Och, tell me about it. One of my friends was trying desperately to become a mother at nineteen. All of us who weren't trying to get pregnant or build bizarre 1950s housewife fantasies about pleasing our husbands? Well, we were just silly people who didn't understand the world. Feh.

I've honestly never understood that mentality. I was hanging out at [livejournal.com profile] childfree for a while simply because it was a relief to find a bunch of people who didn't think that way. But eventually the repetitiveness of the posts (not to mention the occasionally rather caustic tone of discussion) wore on me.

But...yeah. I still don't understand how people can think the only purpose in life is to sprog. Isn't the world overpopulated enough?

If only the unintelligent sprogged, then there would be badness. Im sure that some genes are more worthy than others, in the capability to eventually produce a "successful" person.

Addendum: even if genes have nothing to do with it, it's more difficult to pass on your values to someone else's children, than to your own.

2 children per household!
