Things at the library were incredibly quiet today. Most of the kids were at the town's Fourth of July Games (I have a feeling they wouldn't have so much attendance if there weren't literal cash prizes), and most of the adults were probably either also at the games, out enjoying the nice weather, or getting drunk.
Around 3:30 I braved the weather to head down to the post office in hopes of finding packages. The weather was some of the strangest (for Barrow) that I've seen - it was hot (60-64 degrees), humid (which it almost never is, considering this is the Arctic desert we're living in), and very little wind. Lots and lots of mosquitoes, though. Urgh. I keep feeling like there are little legs tickling me on any exposed flesh whenever I go outside. Bloody overcompensation mechanisms.
On the plus side, I hit the jackpot at the post office today - leather corset, sewing patterns, and DVD-ROM's (thank you,
hereticorp), oh my!
The air quality was also rather strange, for Barrow - because the wind was going in the opposite direction from normal, it blew a whole bunch of smoke from the huge forest fire that's raging down near Fairbanks. For a while this afternoon it was quite hazy; also something you don't see much up here (though we get fog on a semi-regular basis).
I'm not sure if the smoke in the air had anything to do with it, though I'm certain it didn't help, but round about 4:00 I started getting a headache; round about 5 it was pretty damn bad (I'm not sure if it was just a really bad headache or a light migraine). I was able to lie on the couch and greet people who had arrived for my mother's Let-Celebrate-Tom-Cruise's-Birthday party, but when she got home I went straight back to bed. I ended up asleep for something like four and a half hours, which means that I missed the party and (to use Tak's words) a two-hour long explosion with occasional plot (a.k.a. Mission Impossible: 2), but at least it's gone now.
Bah. It's not only a boring entry, it's disjointed too! I'm going to go sew something now...
