"What power would Hell have if its inhabitants were unable to dream of Heaven?"
--Neil Gaiman

I'm really liking the "Sandman" series. And I'm not a big one for comic books in general. Probably because I'm a context reader, and therefore tend to miss things when it's only these little blocks of text. But the artwork is interesting (not quite gothic, but definitely not mainstream comic-book style), the story both sufficiently dark and sufficiently intelligent for my tastes, and there are some really nifty lines like that that really make my eyes widen.

Here's hoping that the library has the whole collection...I should really check that.

Hrmmm. Library. I never thought of looking there.
I really enjoy his fiction, and have wanted to look into his comics for a while. (I think Murder Mysteries is my favorite but I'm a Christian mythology freak.)

If you like Sandman you should read Gaiman's novels. NEVERWHERE is very dark and bleak but a fabulous story. AMERICAN GODS is highly recommended. Gaiman has a knack for producing wonderfully dark yet hopeful stories.

NEVERWHERE was also a six-part British miniseries.

I enjoyed the Sandman during its first run..however I wasn't too fussed about how he ended it. I think he ran out of ideas. I think it was very hard for him to be as brilliant as those early issues truly were. I have not read any of his later Sandman attempts.

He's got a way of making you care about his characters..even when the stories aren't the greatest, you can tell that he likes his characters very, very much and that will still suck you in.

He has a blog officialgaiman on lj and his website www.neilgaiman.com.

The Sandman series started me on a lifelong appreciation of the writer. What you have to remember about the comics is that occassionaly the artwork will suck donkey boogies but the writing never does.

Kudos to a fellow addict. :)

I've only read the first volume, but that's because Barnes and Noble has this stupid way of having volumes one, three, four and seven of ANYTHING. And shyeah, I can't be buying it or anything online, so I read it in the bookstore. But yeah, the library, that's a good idea.

Previous commenter recommended American Gods. I definitely recommend it too. I even pushed it down to my company's book club (how lucky am I that we have a book club here!), and we'll be discussing it at the end of the month. Woot!
