A culture whose values that I once abhorred
Holds me enthralled with its glitter
I know there is blackness, corruption beneath, but
The gildedness shines in my eyes.

My life, that was once plenty pleasant enough
Now seems all too small to contain me
But what am I now if I am not myself?
I have changed, but is it for the best?

Young and intelligent, beautiful too
Is it true that I now have it all?
Can I be content with my current existence
When Culture tells me I want more?

I suddenly find my life boring and stagnant
I ache to experience more
There's so much in life that I have yet to see
The world now seems in my reach.

Nice poem, although -- it seems -- California claims another victim. =)

Well, that's the thing. I still don't like the values that California culture espouses. And I still hate the corruption, greed, and apathy that lies underneath the glittery surface. But this is the first time I've actually seen said glittery surface, and suddenly I realize why it is so many people are drawn to it, whether or not they know what's underneath.

So are you going to turn that one in for the class?

Might as well. It actually has some form to it (unlike many of my poems), and it's not like it's intensely personal or anything...

Not bad!

Now record a wav/mp3 file of yourself reciting it. ^_^
