Apparently, there is a halfway decent fabric shop in Barrow. Inupiat Cleaners (they started out as a dry cleaning place, then started carrying fur and leather) has apparently expanded, and they now have fabric, trim, zippers, thread, sewing supplies, and all sorts of stuff like that. It's not anywhere near as huge as someplace like JoAnn's, but it's at least got a decent selection, and will probably be more than enough for my planned sewing projects, once the patterns get here. If anyone's interested (and I haven't shown these to you already), I've currently got plans to make a serving wench outfit and a cloak to go over it. Maybe I could get a job in a period-style bar, serving ale...

There's a movie of the musical version of The Phantom of the Opera coming out at Christmas. Hopefully, by then, I'll be in a place with a theater to go see it; I just hope they do a good job with it. But hey, if they don't, maybe I'll get to star in the remake. *grin*
From the Department of "Surpise, Surprise":
According to this article on MSN Careers, not only do pretty people get the advantage when it comes to everything from doctors to traffic tickets, they also are likely to earn more in their chosen career. Now, considering that human beings are pretty much hard-wired to be nicer to attractive people, I hardly find that surprising; however, I also wonder how much of this has to do with a person's view of themself as "attractive" or "unattractive". I've known plenty of guys and chicks who might not be considered attractive objectively, but who had a lot of charisma and/or charm nonetheless. Whereas, on the other side, there are probably a lot of people who might have perfectly decent looks but consider themselves to be so unattractive that they have no self-esteem and therefore miss out on job opportunities and such. I wonder whether this study was based on external opinions of the people's attractiveness, or their own internal opinions of themselves...

Sadie Neakok, an elderly Inupiat lady who lived through the conversion of Barrow from near-stone-age to the relative modern comfort we have now, died last night. I met her briefly once, and came away thinking that I hope I accomplish as much in my life as she did in hers. I salute her, and hope that her descendants will accomplish as much in their lives; though to be honest, I don't have that much hope for many of them. Their culture is dying, and most of the community just seems...lost.

For some reason, I feel rather out of it today. Not sick, exactly, just...not quite all here. Hopefully that'll change once I get to work. Not that my job takes a whole lot of brainpower, but hey.
In any case, off to shower and shave (well, maybe not) and walk to work...
