Sixty bucks? That is expensive. Must be trying to cut down on the number of people on the roads in New York. Of course, in places like France, it's supposed to be something like the equivalent of several hundred dollars to get your license...but they have much better public transit.

Our public transit stinks, but everybody has to drive too. It's one of those catch 22's. You can't afford to pay for your permit until you can get a job. You can't a get a job because there's no transit.


It really doesn't cut down on the number of people driving. In New York City though, some people don't have their permits until they are in their late 20's. Here though (on the exact other side of the state), you get your permit when you are 16, or else you are ridiculed and taunted.

I've been lucky, most of my jobs have been either on the bus route or a $5 cab ride away. I didn't get my permit (obviously) until I was 20, myself...never was really interested in driving during high school. Of course, you can get your permit at 14 here, so maybe that's why people weren't taunted...

I never wanted to get my permit. 10 days after turning 16, my dad said "ok lets go to the DMV." We went, waited in line for...oh THREE hours, and spent the next year and a half being yelled at by my father for not driving right.


I would love to not have to own a car, but unfortunately I don't live in a city.


Damn suburbia.
