When you were a kid, did you ever spend hours looking at some sort of pattern, be it a french-style curlicue design or the texturing on the wall by your bed? Were you ever fascinated by the endless objects and pictures you could pick out, or that were suggested by essentially random shapes?
How long has it been since you've done that?
Although I've never been drunk or high on any sort of drug other than endorphins, I've found that when you *are* high on endorphins (or any other sort of drug, according to friends) you become fascinated with what are essentially senseless patterns. It almost seems to bring back that enthrallment that you had as a young child with simple things.
I sometimes wonder if this is because as we age, we're taught to ignore "silly" or "stupid" things in favor of doing things that are "productive" and making "efficient" use of our time. So, while spending large amounts of time looking at the shape of the clouds is all right when you're a kid, or if you're a parent of a kid, it's considered eccentric when you're an adult, at least if you want people to take you seriously. Therefore, we automatically tune things like that out of our consciousness, and then wonder why we seem to have lost all fascination or interest in life. It gets to the point where to feel interested in anything at all, we have to be in an altered state of consciousness induced by endorphins or drugs of some sort.
For a rather odd movie that deals somewhat with this topic, look up "Adaptation"...just don't expect it to make sense. =D
