Today, like a lot of days, has been kind of a mixture.

On the good side, I finally got a copy of Dune's History, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] eventhewaves. I also got a package from Ryan, consisting of my kite and a couple of extra things he tossed in.

I also managed to nab the Tuzzy Library's copy of The Da Vinci Code, as well as an interesting-looking book called Library: An Unquiet History. I'm looking forward to reading both of them.

On the not-so-good side, I talked to the library director while I was there, and things aren't looking so great so far as job openings. He seemed pretty impressed with my résumé, but funding for the entire North Slope Borough is tight, and while he has a couple of special projects on the back burner, he's probably not going to be getting word back on whether or not they'll be funded for a few weeks yet. Which basically means I'm back to square one so far as job searching goes. If I wanted to, I could work at Arctic Grocery (or even Arctic Pizza) again, but I'd really rather not, especially for the whole summer - if I'd wanted to get paid $8 to $10 an hour for that kind of work, I could've stayed in Juneau and at least had a better climate.

In addition, I found the reason the wireless network my brother set up was so slow/unreliable: he had it hooked up to a POS computer with a 14.4 modem. I shit you not. No wonder it was taking eBay five minutes to load a page. My mother shelled out hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars for his computer equipment over the past few years, and when he moved out and she asked him to leave a wireless setup for her, he gave her the crappiest piece of junk he had. My god, I want to strangle the kid.

I'm beginning to wish I'd run off to California to stay with Brian for the summer. If it weren't for the fact that showing up penniless (not to mention car-less and job-less) on a friend's doorstep seems kind of uncool, I might just save up the seven hundred and fly down there...
