I went to the Wellness Center here in town to see about getting more birth control...not that I'm anywhere near running out yet, but it's always good to stock up. They told me they had the patch available now up here, and - being as this is Barrow, land of government subsidies, thanks to the fact that we screwed over the Natives for so long - I figured it'd be either free, like the pills were, or at the very least fairly cheap.

Wrong.

They wanted $300 for a six-month supply - $50 a month. I gave them my insurance card, and apparently - don't ask me the logic behind this, because I don't want to know - the insurance only pays for 50% of the first month. $50 a month for a bit more peace of mind (I've been known to miss the occasional pill, hence the reason I was thinking about getting the patch in the first place). I know it's cheaper than having kids, but Christ in lacy underwear, that's a lot of money. Especially considering that most of the people who need that sort of thing (like me) are on fairly limited budgets.

As it happened, I ended up saying fuckit and shelling out $25 for one month. That much seemed slightly more reasonable, and I figure I can try it one of these months and see how it works. I'm sure I can get it cheaper at a University clinic if I like it.

But still...damn. $50 a month.

I really fucking hate the U.S. health care system.
