missroserose: (Shake it!)

After running an errand this morning, Brian and I on a whim decided to drive out to Bisbee, since we hadn't been out there yet and had heard it was where all the arty liberal hippy socialist folks hung out (y'know, folks like us). And I've got to say, it lives up to its reputation and then some.

It feels surprisingly similar to Juneau, actually - there's no ocean nearby, but it's built on a mountainside much the same way Juneau is, and it's an old copper-mining town so there's a lot of the same turn-of-the-century motif. The architecture also reminded me quite a bit of Victoria; lots of red brick and walking paths. Just going up the main drag is all kinds of fun; lots of galleries, junk shops (Brian found an old vacuum-tube radio at one), clothing stores (with a rather surprising emphasis on costumery), museums, and other such arty-person havens. The place is absolutely a set designer's or propmaster's dream - several times Brian and I came across an old telephone, or a pitcher and basin set, or other similar piece and went "I bet Perseverance Theatre would sell a kidney to get their hands on one of these." I might have to offer my services as a procurer if they have a particularly tricky show sometime.

It's amazing how much a change of scenery can help you feel reinvigorated. Much as I love the home we've made here in Sierra Vista, the relative lack of culture or community (deployment town and all) can get really depressing, and while Tombstone's got some nifty things to see, we got hit smack in the face with rabid conservatism while we were there, which kind of turned us off to the whole place. As a result, I'd been feeling kind of pessimistic about the whole "finding a social group" idea, but suddenly finding a place full of people like us makes me feel a lot better. Also, it helps that a friend-of-a-friend lives there and has invited me out for karaoke tonight, so I guess I'll be heading back. Social life, woot!
