Resurrection
Mar. 19th, 2008 10:08 pmMy computer has fortunately been resurrected, thanks to the wonders of OS X recovery discs. I lost all the data I had on here previously, but since the computer was only three months old, it didn't have much on it. Still, though, all the more reason to invest in a Time Capsule. One-touch network-based backup system = very yes.
Obviously the hardware in my poor MacBook is fine, but something had corrupted the file system to the point of irretrievability - Brian spent an hour or so futzing with it and couldn't even get the volume to register properly. The weird thing was there were absolutely no warning signs - I hadn't done so much as a hard reset, there hadn't been any other problems (aside from the ongoing battle with the flaky wireless connection), and prior to the failure I had just shut it off from the menu like any other time. Considering the convenience of the tech support denial (seriously...day 91 on a 90 day support plan), the paranoid part of me almost thinks that someone at Apple (either a disgruntled employee or a marketer of support plans) planted some sort of time bomb in there. But I know that's pretty unlikely. So I guess I'll be blaming the technology gremlins. Unless it happens again, in which case I *am* going to call up Apple and tell them the hardware is faulty.
On the plus side of the column, I've reinstalled with OS X 10.4 Tiger and the wireless connection appears to be rock-solid. So I'll probably hold off on re-updating to Leopard until they've released a service pack or two.
I still haven't named this computer...and thanks to the early-life hard disc wipe, I'm thinking I should name her after a famous amnesiac. The first one that's coming to mind is Leonard, after the dude from Memento, but I'd kind of prefer a feminine name. Any suggestions?
We went climbing with Monica today for the first time in a good week and a half - damn colds. Brian even got some pictures, which I'll have to post whenever he gets around to processing them (so, look for them anywhere between two days and two months from now). I had almost no stamina because of how long I'd been gone, but I did at least make it up a couple courses and ran half a mile on the treadmill. Now to work towards getting to my previous record of five climbs and a mile-long run...and beyond! I hope. Either way, it felt good to have gotten some exercise again.
I also have Kitty back now, which is nice. I haven't driven her much lately because Brian and I have been riding to work together in the Audi, and then I had to get the valve stem on one of the tires fixed so I could re-inflate the (leaking and by then flat) tire. So she was sitting in our driveway with the little doughnut tire on looking rather inconsolable. But she's all put back together now, and I got to drive her to my dentist appointment and everything. I hadn't even realized how much I missed her...at this rate, I dunno that I'll ever actually sell her. (Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, though it makes budgeting a little tighter for the next three years until she's paid off.) I should really vacuum, dust and clean her out, though, even if I am keeping her. I don't think I've given her a thorough interior cleaning in more than a year and it's really showing.
That's basically it for today. Was kind of a mixed bag (computer working, car running, going climbing, yay!; tech support denial, root canal appointment, missed work, boo!), but not too bad altogether. Although I didn't get much sleep last night, and I think it's showing in the rambling and only loosely cohesive tone of this entry...
