Coming to you live from beautiful Sitka, Alaska, it's the one, the only, the strange, the snarky...

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I'm here in Sitka for a couple of days, on my very first business trip. (Exactly what percentage of entry-level receptionist jobs offer travel opportunities? I'm going to guess not many.) As near as I can tell, Wade was impressed enough with the job I did cleaning up the reception area and filing system in our main office that, when Don (our lone guy out here) mentioned that he was really falling behind on paperwork, he sent me here to clean things up (as well as to do some other office-grunt work like taking inventory). I have to say that I really like Sitka, too - I never thought I'd find somewhere prettier than Juneau, but Sitka's like Juneau-plus - instead of being on the channel, it's out on the open ocean, so you get real sunsets and a heckuva gorgeous view pretty much wherever you are. And you still have the mountains coming straight up out of the islands, and the rainforest all around. Not that I want to live here or anything, but it's been fun to visit.

It's also been a productive couple of days. At the moment, though, I'm at something of a standstill, since I was shredding paper while waiting for Don to get back and help with inventory when the paper shredder overheated. Not that I blame it - it's probably a good 75 to 80 degrees here in Don's office. The manual's recommended 10 minutes apparently weren't enough to render it operational again, so I figured I'd take a little while longer to check on things here in Internet-land.

I was pleasantly surprised to read that the movie version of The Da Vinci Code reportedly doesn't totally suck. It's gotten fairly mixed reviews, but the general consensus seems to be that if you (like me) liked the ideas in the plot but thought that the writing itself was rather graceless and inelegant, you'll like the movie better - mostly because Ron Howard is a better filmmaker than Dan Brown is a writer. (My favorite phrase was when Roger Ebert described Tom Hanks' character as a "theo-intellectual Indiana Jones".) I have to admit that I had my reservations about Tom Hanks in the role of Robert Langdon - I'd pictured Langdon in his mid-thirties or so, and Hanks has passed that stage by a significant margin - but I'm willing to keep an open mind. And I couldn't do anything but applaud their choice of Audrey Tautou as Sophie - she's exactly who I would've picked.

In further movie news, Over the Hedge seems to be pretty much entirely what the previews were trying to portray - no Shrek, but certainly enjoyable fare for those of Generation Snark (as Brian and I have mentally dubbed our Jon Stewart-worshipping demographic). I couldn't help but think that some reviewers had a point, though, when they felt the movie was being rather hypocritical in criticizing human consumerism - how many plush toys/backpacks/lunchboxes/headbands/maxi pads/God-knows-whats are going to be sold with these characters on them?

Still, though, both will likely be on the rental list for our Home-Theatre-O-Doom. *thunder roll*

Speaking of which, Brian's found an even better deal on an even bigger Toshiba DLP - 62", 1080p, and refurbished so in addition to a cheaper price you get a product that's been through pretty rigorous testing. The bezel isn't quite as cool looking, but according to all the reviews the picture is absolutely outstanding. Unfortunately I don't have the link on this computer, so I'll trust Brian to provide it in the comments for those who are interested in seeing what this behemoth will look like.

I should probably be distressed that the plans for this TV started out at 36" or so and have (currently) ended at 62", shouldn't I?

Anyway, the paper shredder no longer feels like there's some sort of nuclear reaction going on underneath the surface, so I'm going to see if I can't finish shredding this pile of sooper-sekrit documents...like office supply invoices. Yeah. Can't have rival companies knowing what kind of paperclips we buy. =)

What is it about vacations that means that I'll look at a $40 pair of sandals at Fred's in Juneau and toy with the idea of buying them, but won't actually do so even when they're on sale for $30, whereas in Sitka I'll find a different pair of sandals for $40 and go "Oh, that's not too bad, I'll nab them"?

In my defense, these are actually nicer sandals. Very cute too. Now I'm going to have to use that pedicure gift certificate Nancy gave me back on Valentine's day...

The flight I was taking out of here this evening was cancelled due to "mechanical trouble". Back in Barrow, this would've been code for "Another flight with more people waiting had mechanical trouble and we borrowed your plane", but I think here it was just a case of something going "boing" that they weren't able to fix right away. Ah well.

Fortunately, AK Air put me up in the same hotel I was in last night, so I get a fairly nice room with a comfy (albeit slightly firm) bed. Also, the sun has been coming out in brief spurts, and I have to say that Sitka is even prettier when not socked in with fog. There are certainly worse places to be stuck for a night.

Still, though, I'm glad I'm going home on the early flight tomorrow (even if I do have to be up at 4 AM to catch it). I can't wait to be home with my Brian and my kitties...
