So the Schadenfreude News Network is all over Britney Spears' supposed "comeback" performance at the MTV Video Music Awards - apparently it was fairly obvious that she had no idea what she was doing. Washed-up superstar commentary aside, I've noticed a distinct theme in the descriptions of her performing: her "glassy-eyed stare", her "shambling dance movements", her "lurching gait" - Of course! Why didn't we see it before? Britney Spears has been replaced by a zombie!

In all seriousness, I really feel more sorry for her than anything else. She reminds me a lot of Judy Garland - say what you will about her overproduced sexed-up schtick, but once upon a time she could really sing and move. Unfortunately, once "discovered" by the record companies and catapulted to superstardom, she obviously didn't have the sort of emotional maturity and sense of self to handle that kind of attention. Once freed from the rigors of touring and recording, therefore, she's been coasting into ever-more-spectacular-flameouts as more and more of her life falls apart. (I can only imagine what this reception will do to her probably-already-trashed self-esteem - the one thing she supposedly had going for her is now gone.) And I somehow doubt that she has the introspective capability to take a good hard look at herself and start doing whatever she really wants to do - I'm pretty certain that she's never had to really think and stand up for herself before. But if she doesn't learn to do exactly that, she's just going to continue messing up her life until even the tabloids lose interest in her.
