DVD Verdict, a movie review site I frequently read, is apparently looking for new writers. It's a fairly informal review style that I actually think I might be pretty good at working within; so long as you follow the format, you're allowed a lot of leeway in the contents. And I'm sure most folks here know that I definitely don't suffer from a lack of opinions, especially about movies (as my friend Monica can attest - I can't tell you how many times we've gotten into arguments at Blockbuster over my finickiness). Plus it'd be a nifty thing to have on a résumé if I ever end up applying for a professional writing-related position.
On the other hand, they want a commitment of one to two reviews per week. The time involved isn't really a problem (I could pretty easily watch a movie in the evening, take notes, then write up the review the next day during a slow patch at work), but I'm going to guess that I probably wouldn't get a whole lot of choice in the matter as to what films to review. And given the preponderance of disappointing, badly done or just plain mediocre movies as compared to ones that're actually worth watching (a point driven home by my multiple stints working in video stores), I'm guessing that a fairly large percentage of the DVDs I'd be writing about would be crappy. And while the prospect of writing snarky reviews about bad films isn't without its charms, I'm guessing that after several weeks of watching movies like Barbie of Swan Lake or Babes in Kongland, the snark aspect might lose its allure.
I dunno. I like movies, and I like writing about movies, and being a published (albeit online-published) writer would be neat, but I also like being picky about which movies I watch. So I'm honestly not certain whether I'd enjoy the gig or not. I suppose it couldn't hurt to apply, though...
