Oooh, shiny...
Jul. 18th, 2006 01:44 pmAfter going through two old eMachines, neither of which had enough system resources for the tasks I do on a daily basis and both of which eventually died on me, I finally have myself a shiny new computer for work. It's one of those $900 HP "Media Center" dealies you can get from Costco, and actually works quite well for office use - it's got a pretty awesome processor, a gig of RAM, and a pretty big hard drive. The one place they cut corners was the graphics card, which reportedly kind of sucks; but it's not like I regularly play Halo or anything while I'm at work. And I have to say it's incredibly nice to be able to run iTunes, Firefox, Excel, the phone monitor and FreeCell all at once without anything freezing or hesitating or choking up.
In other news, after many false starts and problems (I'm getting the feeling that newspapers are run very much the way theatre productions are), I finally had my first day handing out booklets and "Welcome"s to cruise ship passengers yesterday. It wasn't bad, though my feet and arms were understandably sore at the end of it - those boxes of books are small but heavy. Reactions from people ran the gamut from ignoring me to absentmindedly taking one to thanking me profusely. My favorite reaction was the man who looked at me severely and asked "Young lady, is this a religious book?" (I might note that the cover says in big letters "Destination Alaska - Coupon Book Inside!") After taking a moment to blink, I told him "No...not unless your religion is capitalism."
Other than that, not much of note has gone on. I did get some awesome birthday swag - a beautiful piece of beadwork on a very nice leather jacket from my mother, the wine and a copy of the Absolute edition of Watchmen from Nancy, and a preorder of Lost Girls from Brian (come to think of it, this is turning into an Alan Moore birthday season - I just need a hardcover V for Vendetta or something =). Not a huge pile of loot, but all of most excellent quality.
I also have an eye appointment scheduled tonight. The last few times I've been pretty regularly once every couple of years; my vision hasn't been changing fast enough to really need more, and the only real reason I'm going now is that my glasses are getting pretty battered. I'd been putting the visit off but finally decided that between getting a raise and having green stuff growing on the nosepieces of my current pair of glasses, it was high time to bite the bullet and shell out whatever the insurance people won't pay. Here's hoping I can find a not-too-fugly pair of frames that I like...I've noticed that thick-rimmed glasses seem to making a distinct resurgence, which I'm not at all sure is a good thing. But hey, to each their own.
