I just got done playing Literati (Yahoo! Games online version of Scrabble) with someone who had the username "blondebombshell1313", or something to that effect. I was making snarky comments as usual, because it amuses me...but for some reason, the person I was playing with started making personal attacks. I guess they got offended when I said something like "Don't use so many question marks - think of the poor punctuation-deprived orphans in Africa" - suddenly (s)he was telling me I was "weird" (to which I was happy to agree), that I had "issues", that I must play games online all the time because I wrote out things like "*grumble*" and "*laughs*", etc., etc. It felt rather like being on a playground and having a 12-year-old hurl insults at me, although (s)he claimed to be a "grad student with a degree in speech pathology". (You'd think that a grad student would know not to use 10 question marks at once...)
The kicker? (S)he was winning the entire time. Once in a while I've come across a bad loser who started attacking me because I was winning, but apparently it was something else that bothered this person. I haven't the vaguest clue what - perhaps (s)he thought I was being a snob because I used proper grammar? Maybe (s)he took offense at one of my remarks? (I honestly don't think any of them would be considered offensive unless one had a really thin skin, and I only made a couple anyway...) Maybe I just didn't fit in with their perception of someone who's normal, and as a result they had to dismiss me as weird? How sad would that be, that they would view someone with a different sense of humor as that much of a threat?
I dunno. There are a lot of strange folks out there on teh intarwebs, stranger than me even (hard to believe, I know). I feel sort of sorry for this person; if they have this hard of a time dealing with someone on my level of "weirdness", how're they going to deal with the huge variety of people they'll meet in their life?
