Woo! Early Christmas loot!
Dec. 6th, 2005 02:23 pmTherman and my mother dropped by for a few days to see my show on their way to a trip elsewhere. It was very nice to see my mother again, and meeting Therman was fun. I think he's been a good influence on her too - see previous post. Used to be I couldn't mention alcohol without her having a hissy fit about it, and last night she even tried some of the Alaskan Brewery Smoked Porter with us to see if it was really as good as all the critics would have it. (It was.)
Also last night, we had a mini-Christmas, since she's going to be in California or some place over the holiday and Brian and I are going to be visiting his mother anyway. My gifts seemed to be well-received; Therman seemed to like his scarf (though it can sometimes be hard to tell with him), Mum was excited about the movies Brian and I gave her and Brian was gushing (or to use his word, "enthusing") all evening over The Art of Discworld. Which, incidentally, is a really nifty book if you're at all familiar with Terry Pratchett's universe; I'm looking forward to reading it, myself.
As for loot received, things went pretty equally well. Therman got me (admittedly at my mother's behest) the illustrated version of Neil Gaiman's Stardust. I read the story some time back and found it very sweet; at first flip-through the pictures seem to have done it justice. (Incidentally, I recommend it to anyone who enjoys fairy tales, or is a student of British literature - in true Gaiman fashion, it incorporates many of the stylistic decisions and storytelling elements of the Victorian period in which it is set but manages to still stand very prominently on its own as a work of modern fiction.) Mum bought the fourth season of Six Feet Under for Brian and me, which will be fun to watch, and gave me one of her moon-goddess suncatchers that I've often admired. And Brian got me a copy of the board game Dread Pirate, which I've been wanting since I played it with Jamie. I'm looking forward to playing it with him and anyone else I can rope into sitting around the table for an hour or two.
As fun as last night was, though, I'm going to miss my mother at Christmas this year. This is actually the first year I'm going to be spending away from her and my brother, and while it's not unexpected or particularly unfortunate, it's another one of those little things that goes to show how much my life has changed in the past year. *sigh*
And now I'm back to work (and trying to fight off this darn cold...)
