8/23/08: Tried pistachio ice cream for the first time today. It's pretty good! Reminds me of those Maple Nut Goodies you can buy in the bagged candy section. Also it tastes nothing like real pistachios, which is a plus in my book

Since it's almost lunchtime, I figure now's a good time to make a revelation:

I have participated in a meme.

No wait! Come back! It is a fun meme! (Or at least a delicious one.)

As the instructions would have it, this list consists of 100 foods that Andrew Wheeler, whom Google tells me is the co-author of the British food blog Very Good Taste, thinks every person should try at least once. The rules for the meme:

Bold those foods that you've tried.
Strike those that you'd never consider eating.

I've seen folks adding asterisks to foods that they'd like to try, but I'm one of those people who would be interested in trying almost any dish once - it's pretty hard to actually make me go "blech, I wouldn't eat that". Interestingly, the only dishes in this list that actually gave me such a response were Poutine (I can see how it could be comfort food, but the thought of all that fat makes my stomach hurt), and Krispy Kreme doughnuts (same deal). So we can assume that anything not struck-through is something I'd be interested in trying at least once.

So without further ado, I present:

I found myself slightly disappointed by my performance in the OmniV100, but still not sure I should resolve to do much better. I don't envision myself ever willingly eating horse or foie gras, but it still opened my eyes to the things some people will happily stuff down their gullet.

And you can also find the erudite and insightful Mr. Wheeler at [livejournal.com profile] anw. He's one of those types who, even if you don't necessarily fall into an overlapping Venn diagram of interests, is still entertaining and intellectually provocative.

Hm, thanks for the tip. I may have to have a look.

I wouldn't call myself a foodie per se - I'm not a huge food enthusiast. But I do like trying new things (in all parts of life, including food). Although right now I'm a bit busy/broke to really pursue food as a hobby, I think I might like to do so in a decade or two when I have more time/money - and am a little less worried about my figure. :D

Heh. Most of the diversity of my food list was borne of lack of funds. I can't imagine anyone willingly eating spam. I'm just glad we have a Panda Express on campus now....

Well, hey. Far be it from me to criticize. I just can't stand them myself, is all.

Now, give me a fresh-made glazed old-fashioned any day...mmmm.

Hee. Yeah, I don't know why, but ever since I was about 10 I've never been a big fan of the puffy greasy sorts. Love cake doughnuts and doughnut holes, though. There's a place here in town that does cherry and apple cinnamon flavored doughnut holes. Yum.

I've eaten lots of stuff that you haven't.

But you've eaten stuff that I can't even identify. What the heck is gjetost??

And you're brave about the fugu. I'd have to strike that.

Gjetost is a kind of Norwegian cheese made from goat's milk (I think). It's brown in color and has a caramel-y, nutty, almost sweet flavour. My boss loves it with apples, and a friend of ours invited us over for dinner where we had roast lamb with a gjetost-based sauce. Very rich, but it tasted absolutely divine.

As for fugu, I'd make certain it came from a reputable restaurant, of course. And I'm a big fan of sushi and fish in general, so I think it would be neat to try.

I've eaten a lot of that stuff, and I imagine I've probably eaten more than I realize I have, simply cuz I don't know what they are. :P (...what, I do eat foods sometimes without having a clue what they are...)
