Who says politeness is dead?
Mar. 6th, 2004 02:05 pmDay 1/2 of L.A. Trip:
Got in about 9:40 last night. Made it to Brian's (a.k.a.
eventhewaves) house with baggage, relatively unscathed. Politely admired the mother of all huge trees in the front yard (hopefully will have pictures soon). Politely socialized (first place I've visited to ever have red wine on hand, yay!), read Ryan (and, due to the lack of soundproofing, most of the rest of the household) a chapter of The Picture of Dorian Gray, went to bed.
Day 1 of L.A. Trip:
After a nice langorous morning, got my first look at the backyard - lovely landscaping, though the koi pond is apparently missing its koi. Went into the kitchen for coffee, politely socialized some more, laughed at Spanish car commercials (translated courtesy of Ryan). Left to pick up the rental car, a 2001 (I think) Suzuki Swift.
Well.
Five minutes after turning it on, we're sitting crosswise next to an intersection of a five-lane road while I politely ask Ryan which gas station we're going to. After swerving back and forth three times (fortunately nobody's coming), he decides to take a left. We enter the gas station through the exit side, back in to a pump, fill up ($2.11 a gallon, while the one on across the corner $2.25 and the one down the street $2.59), leave, and proceed down various streets on the way back to Brian's house. Left some rubber on the road after Ryan nearly rear-ends another driver, who turns around and politely gives us a look that, had she not been wearing sunglasses, would probably have melted the windshield. Fortunately, we make it home unscathed by other cars or other driver's looks.
If Ryan ever, ever, ever criticizes my driving again, I'm going to put his head through the window.
Politely.
