missroserose: (Christmas Picard)
Having just written this post, it strikes me completely in retrospect that this is possibly the most appropriate icon I can think of for it. So thanks to [livejournal.com profile] darth_snarky for sharing it with me. :)

Step One

Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ (or Facebook, or social networking tool of choice). The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fun ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

If you wish for real possible things, make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post so that the holiday joy will spread.

Step Two

Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it. Once a wish has been granted, it will be crossed off my list.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

So, here's my list, in no particular order:

1.) Some kind of performance-based gig. I sing pretty darn well, I'm great at dancing so long as you don't require me to follow a partner, and I can even act when I put my mind to it. Hell, I'm even told I do a great job reading aloud, and I have a pretty nice microphone if somebody wants to commission an audiobook.

2.) Books. Used or new, I'm not picky. Anything on my Goodreads to-read shelf not already marked "in-library" is a safe bet, but I'm more than willing to try other stuff - I tend to particularly like speculative fiction and fantasy, although I'm not restrictive about it. Super-nice editions of classics from the aforementioned genre are always ++good.

3.) Furniture. We're making progress on furnishing our place, but it's slow going - our tight budget means that we're pretty much restricted to stuff from Craigslist for the moment. We're in rather dire need of a dresser and nightstand; a futon frame for the spare bedroom wouldn't go amiss, either (my mother's sending us a mattress). A desk chair would also be nice - we just found a lovely wood desk for cheap but don't have a chair for it yet.

4.) Local friends in Sierra Vista (or even Tucson). I miss having people to call up and go "Hey, want to come over and watch this movie?" or "It's Saturday, let's go dancing!" or "I totally have to lend you this book!" Maybe I really should see about starting up that book club...

5.) A convertible. Doesn't have to be particularly new or fast or exciting - I have a deep and abiding fondness for Miatas - but it seems a shame to live in a place where a convertible would actually be a practical daily driver, and not own one. If you're me and have wanted one since you were a kid, anyway.

6.) A check for $100,000 so Brian and I can start up the steampunk-themed coffee shop in Tucson we've been talking about. (Hey, it said dream big...)

7.) A donation to the Worldbuilders fundraiser. In my name would be nice, since there are some pretty darn cool prizes, but in the end that's less important to me than the cause.

8.) Pictures of you and the shelter kitty you just adopted at my urging. (Urge. Urge.) Because kitties are awesome, and there are far too many out there that need a home. (For the cat-allergic or -overloaded, another homeless animal will do fine, or a donation to your local humane society's desexing program.)

9.) More icons. I love the creativity behind the various icons I see, and I'd like to have a few more (I even have a paid account to hold them), but my one qualification is that it feels like something representative of me - given that the icon is essentially my online avatar, I far prefer one that gives people some idea of who I am. Problem is, I don't spend a whole lot of time in LJ communities anymore (where I used to pick them up), and whenever I go looking for icons I tend to find a lot that make me go "Oh, that's funny/pretty/clever/well done, but I don't think I'd ever use it." So if you've seen (or made) an icon that strikes you as something representative of some aspect of my personality, point me in that direction.

10.) A massage. I've been having trouble turning my head all the way to one side while doing triangle pose, which doesn't strike me as a good sign.

I want to reiterate the bit from the instructions that this is posted entirely without expectation; I already feel bad enough about not being able to afford gifts for my friends this year (and not because I feel like it's required, but because I like picking out presents for people that I know they'll enjoy). But I posted this in part because I hope my friends will post it as well and possibly come up with a wish that I could fulfill, so go! Post! And on the off chance you want to get in touch with me, you can reach me at roseneko {sqiggly "at" sign} gmail {period} com.
