Had my third day at work today, and it's actually going pretty well. After the first day I was pretty darn near close to convinced that it would take me forever to get the hang of things, but during the second day I got the hang of the basics, and by now I think I've got two-thirds of it down. I still get a little apprehensive before answering the phone, and I'm still trying to check things with the other receptionists before finalizing, but mostly I seem to be doing all right. I think the reason it was all so overwhelming the first day was partly due to the pace (Monday was rather busy, whereas the last couple of days have been fairly slow) and partly due to the fact that it looks like a million things to learn, until you find out that it's really only six or seven things that you do repeatedly.
I'm really liking the job so far; aside from the better pay, it's a bit faster-paced than the library (which makes it a bit harder but also makes the time go by quicker). The people who work there are all quite nice, and Tracy seems to like me a lot - it probably helps that she's opinionated and strong-willed and not always entirely tactful, too. :) But one of the things I really like about it is the fact that they try to put special focus on customer service, so I get to talk to the clients and meet their animals and generally feel like I'm helping people, rather than just being another cog in the machine.
So far as moving goes, we're about 90% moved in. Saturday we're probably going to help Brian's mum with hauling even more stuff to the dump, as well as getting Joel's daybed moved into our guest room. There are probably some other bits and bobs that we'll be taking from her house, as well, but that's mostly going to be later this month as she gets everything packed up.
Decorating, on the other hand, is another story. Neither of us have a whole lot of time or money for decorations at the moment, so the walls are pretty bare. I do have some plans, though - getting matching towels and a shower curtain and rugs for the bathroom, and maybe seeing what I can find for wall decorations on eBay - I have a couple of wall scrolls from there that make really nice bedroom decorations (though not so great for the living room, as they feature partially nude Japanese women). Also, we're going to need a few floor lamps. The apartment has something like three overhead lamps in the kitchen, a couple (burned out) in the entryway, and none in the living room or bedrooms. The lack of light isn't that noticeable in the summer, thanks to the huge windows and all, but come winter we're definitely going to want some more light sources. If I can find some of those über-bright halogen floor lamps, I'll be happy - they're nice and bright and not too energy consuming (although they do present fire hazards if placed near curtains and whatnot).
In other news, my mother is coming down here for a visit on Sunday. I managed to get Monday and Wednesday off from work, so I'll get to spend some time with her, which is nice. Even though we stay in pretty close contact, it's still nice to see her - I'll be able to show off my new apartment, and she loves Brian. I'm also going to try and get my wisdom teeth taken out on Monday, so she'll be there to drive me home and keep me company and generally be mommy-esque. It'll be kind of a nice reprieve from trying to be all grown-up and adult all the time, and it's been a year since the dentists in Barrow said that I needed to have them out right away...*sigh*. I guess I should admit to the fact that I probably wouldn't even be doing it now except they've started to bother me. They're not hurting, exactly, but they're certainly making their presence known, and the fact that they're not happy with the current crowded circumstances in my mouth...=P
In any case, I'm really looking forward to her visit. Here's hoping everything goes smoothly, travel-wise...
