Computer has been virus scanned, which turned up negative. Given that it took me half a dozen tries to finish the scan (the computer kept shutting off), and I finally made it all the way through by propping the computer up on a couple of books to improve the circulation, I'd say the random shutoff is definitely a problem with overheating.

Guess I'll just keep it on the books for now. If anyone knows how to fix this I'd appreciate their advice.
